Update: July 11, 2013
Just when you think you're winning the rat race, along come the newer, faster, bio-engineered rats to put you back in your place...
I am newly relocated to Springfield and hope to begin shooting soon, but I do need to get myself unpacked, settled in and at least somewhat familiarized with the area. Please be patient.
Greetings and salutations! I'm Hal of Gallery By Hal
and Notable Moments
fame. I initially joined Model Mayhem in 2007 primarily as a means of networking with models & photographers in an effort to improve my portraiture skills. I did not count on MM being quite so addictive, however.
Since signing up I've had the pleasure of working with some absolutely wonderful models as well as meeting & working alongside some exceptional photographers in the Chicagoland area. Over the years I've initiated several projects (current projects may be found in ‘Hal’s Detail Sheets’ above), as well as shooting some more conventional portfolio work.
Now I’m looking forward to getting established in my new hometown.
With my Storytime Ink Project
project, however, I seem to have broken new ground. The response from the Model community on MM has been tremendous so far and continues to increase. Unfortunately, there have been some Life issues and some Medical issues in recent years that have forced me to put aside my camera for awhile.
I’m back, but still dealing with a few of those aforementioned issues. Please accept my apologies if I’m slow to get back to you.
I have set myself up as a “Tattoo Biographer,” so to speak. The idea is to document Interesting & Unique skin art in both words and pictures. I intend to capture the beauty of your artwork & share the back story with those as fascinated with this art form as I am.
Open to both MALE & FEMALE models, but participants MUST be at least 18 years of age with a photo ID to prove it. I will need a copy of your ID, and you will be expected to sign my Commercial Model Release prior to shooting.
Sessions are short, with time split evenly between shooting & discussing your Ink. In addition to a standard headshot, I require two views of your Ink: an extreme close up for detail & a wider view to locate the Ink's positioning on the body beautiful.
Depending on precisely where you have located your Ink, some brief nudity may
be required. Please allow me to stress that nudity IS NOT THE FOCUS of this project or any session work for the project.
I do not have a studio. All model shoots are conducted on location. Depending on where you have located your Artwork, that location may be as public as a State Park or as private as your home. On those rare occasions I schedule multiple sessions, I have been known to rent either studio space or a motel room in which to shoot. This is, sadly, not the rule, but the exception.
Who I'm Looking For
I am looking for Male and Female models with Interesting/Unique Ink
and a story to go along with it. A simple heart or butterfly because it was “the cool thing to do” doesn’t make the cut.
In addition to capturing your Ink, I need to know the story behind it as well. Is it a tribute? A memorial? A celebration of happier times? Sadder times? Where you came from? The result of too much shore leave in Singapore? Pretty pictures are only half the deal on this one, folks.
This project is being conducted on a Trade basis. Each model participating will receive, at minimum, three edited image files: a headshot as well as the wide angle & close up views of the Ink being shot. Please note I said "minimum." The model having multiple tattoos will likely receive more images than the model with a single tattoo. Fair's fair, boys & girls...
Note: Not all tattoos are sufficiently Interesting/Unique to be included in the project, however I do make the occasional exception. This is why the back story is such an important part of this project.
For instance, I know a married couple who have each fought and won a battle with Cancer. They share a pact to obtain matching Hearts when they reach the 5 Year Cancer Free mark. While the Hearts may not be sufficiently Unique by themselves, the back story is, and I will be proud and privileged to include their Ink as part of my project.
The backstory is important.
