My name is Jax, a nickname gained in college b/c my friends considered me the "Jax of All Trades".
Always in the service industry, I've worn many hats. Manual laborer, saleswoman, entertainer, waitress, martial artist, personal trainer, dance instructor, life skills mentor, mother...but my heart has always been in the arts, so I finally added "small business owner" to the list.
I am currently working on a new project! Strong Girls World, where empowered women share their strength with their sisters and encourage each other to excellence!
If you or another model or photographer you know is interested in fitness photography, competes in body building, dances, practices extreme sports, or is otherwise part of the AdrenaLifestyle, please connect them with me here!!! I am expanding our website in a very exciting and profitable way! Message me for more details!!!
As Phoenix Alima, I am the sole owner/operator of Nashida Sonsuz: The Bellydance Black Belt Academy. While at Kansas State University (2003-07), I majored in Kinesiology and minored in Dance & Entrepreneurship. I began teaching bellydance, kickboxing, and taekwondo as projects for my education and the snowball effect was powerful!
A decade later, and after much "gypsying around", I have moved my Bellydance Academy to the Houston area, offering classes in Humble, Kingwood, downtown Houston, and the Galleria.
At Nashida Sonsuz, we do not "take dance class". We train for professional and personal improvement and empowerment. To become a skilled technical dancer who can book paid performances in any venue, you must complete a 12 month program to earn your Bellydance Black Belt which will educate you on the complex technical and cultural aspects of Middle Eastern/Oriental/Belly Dance. Like me, belly dance is known under a variety of names and is open to fusion and evolution, meaning it can be coupled with any other style of dance in order to accurately express the music selection.
In a melting pot culture like the United States, it is very important that we learn to embrace and appreciate the variety of cultures surrounding us in order to more completely understand all the nuances of modern American music. New EDM, dub-step, hip-hop, pop, & even rock music over the last 5 years has followed a trend of fusing various genres together for a more realistic experience of American culture. Popular examples would be Iggy Azalea, Jason Derulo, Shakira, Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, Sia, Awolnation, Tool, Eminem, Lil Wayne...all of whom have made recent music that is perfect for bellydance technique.
Indeed, bellydance is the very foundation of hip hop. Your second year enrolled in our Academy begins to examine the various ways to fuse belly dance with other cultural and classical styles of dance as you work towards higher degrees of black belt and mastership, earning certifications that enable you to teach classes of your own if/when you choose to take the next step in your training, and expanding on your own dance training, to discover the comparisons and contrasts between each genre of dance and the most culturally sensitive methods to fusing said genres.
Nashida Sonsuz is literally translated from Arabic and Turkish as "a woman who desires to learn forever", but more accurately translates as, "Eternal Student". A woman who chooses to never stop learning, will never truly grow old, she will only grow wiser and more beautiful with each new adventure.
Discovery, progress, open-minded thirst for knowledge...these are the things that keep us young. Unharnessed, this mindset & lifestyle can lead to emotional distress, causing depression, anxiety, hopelessness, distrust, cynicism, and stress, all of which have a negative impact on your brain's ability to function correctly, sometimes resulting in a loss of temper, extreme frustration, anxiety, lethargy, headaches, joint pain, nerve pain, trouble controlling emotions or impulses, a change in your metabolism, an inability to focus, or a constant feeling if instability.
Training in a sport or style of dance can cure a large number of these issues and greatly reduce the pain associated with others. Specifically, bellydance is a low stress, no-impact, virtually safe form of exercise, recreation, and entertainment for women and girls of all ages. A lifetime sport that allows you to stay interested and active in your local community, bellydance has always been for women what contact sports have always been for men. A sisterhood of like-minded women, all intent upon the same goal, Nashida Sonsuz is a team, where the students encourage and tutor each other, organize practice sessions outside of class, participate in local events, and show their love and support for the dance community at large.
Now, at Nashida Sonsuz, you can gain all the benefits of martial arts from a dance program! Enjoy real feedback and track your progress and knowledge by participating in our Black Belt program. Starting with a white belt, you will spend one hour a week learning basic techniques, combinations, improvization skills, drum rhythyms and beats, and exploring cultural differences within the bellydance community. You will also examine a current event in the country we are studying for the month which is the artistic foundation for the forms that we use for testing at the end of each month. You will also be tested on your retention and application of our monthly Life Skill. Each form will be based on demonstraring a different core principle of successful relations, or Life Skill. There are 9 belts and 9 Life Skills that lead up to obtaining your Bellydance Black Belt. To be a Black Belt in Bellydance, you must demonstrate to me your technical skills, improvization/artistic skills, drumming knowledge and application of Life Skills, such as the ability to be respectful towards everyone in your life, the discipline to train regularly, both in class and at home, the ability to set and acheive goals, and various other behaviors that we, as adukts, have complete control over and, indeed, a responsibilty to contribute to a peaceful society through practical ethical behavior.
Testing for your next belt is by invite only. You MUST complete a minimum of four consecutive classes, or makeup missed classes with private sessions, to be eligible to test for your next belt. Testing each month will also serve as your audition for the Fusion Raqs Dance Company, a professional bellydance company that hosts and performs at various Middle Eastern-friendly events throughout the Houston area.
Teaching dance class, booking performances, hosting events, and maintaining a personal weights & martial arts regime keeps me more than busy, but somehow I manage to sneak being a mom and fitness model in on the side.
At this time, I only have time for paid gigs or TFCD for muscle cars, motorcyles, or exteme sports shoots.
Photoshoots with me are by appointment only.
Thanks for stopping by and best wishes on your projects!
