About Me

Fred Mathews was born Fredrick Mathews in Chicago, Illinois where he graduated from Dunbar Vocational High School at the top of his class. Mr. Mathews studied Commercial and fine art where he excelled amongst his peers. Although he is mainly self taught; he uses his natural talents to combine acrylic and oils with his advanced air brushing skills to create modern contemporary and urban images. His high school work was remarkably sophisticated. Mr. Mathews work has been featured in Upscale Magazine, Gallery Guichard ( Chicago), Hype Hair, Honey, The Raw Art Show ( Chicago), Griffin Gallery ( Chicago), African Arts and Objects, (Chicago), October Gallery ( Philadelphia, PA), African Festival of the Arts (Chicago and Detroit, MI), Soul on Soul Entertainment (Heavy D), Black Expo, Who’s Who in Atlanta Dyme’s Magazine, Atlanta’s Good Life Magazine, Chicago Defender and is featured in Atlantas Movers and Shakers, Mathews shows the passionate intensity with which he pursued his personal vision, his artistic talents were encouraged by his parents and though it was initially air brushing that beckoned him, it was quite obvious that he would be an artist. Mr. Mathews is quoted as saying “I paint from my soul a reflection of my experiences and what I think people need to see too inspire them. Each one of my paintings shows the love I have for my people and the gift God gave me.” Collectors of his works are Big Boy (Outkast), Cadillac Williams (Tampa Bay Bucs), Kham Beard Sr. ( Kham and Nate Shoes), Yvette Warren, (Midwest Regional Director AT & T), Jan Kruel (State Farm), Dorothy Bolden ( retired General Manager of Ameritec), Steve Jones ( President of Black Baptist Ministers Conference ), Desiree O’ Kelly ( Desi’s Salon), Shaggy (Entertainer) and J.T. Johnson Law Firm in Atlanta Georgia just to name a few. Some of Mr. Mathews influences are Carl Owens, Annie Lee, Ernie Barnes and Gilbert Young. Currently Mr. Mathews is in the process of organizing a fund raising event that will bring awareness to breast cancer which has affected so many African American women across America and abroad. This is the most common female cancer. He will auction off several paintings to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation.
