I am Cory and I consider myself more of a "creative mind" than a photographer. Being self-taught in photography, I never learned "the rules" of photography, and I don't care to. Once you've learned the rules, you've already limited yourself (even if you plan on breaking the them). I put my artistic mind back to work and began illustrating again, using a camera, lights, Photoshop and my imagination.
When I get an idea, it often takes weeks or months for it to come to life. I generally do not shoot a concept until I feel all of the pieces have come together, although I do, occasionally, like the challenge of coming up with ideas on the spot. I have a very vivid imagination, which often goes beyond my budget and/or the laws of physics. In my work, I like to create contrast. Not only in tone or light, but in ideas or subject matter, contrasting ideas of beauty and ugliness. For example, taking something as ugly as a cockroach and covering a beautiful woman in them. This particular photo does evoke a reaction in people - they typically find it grotesque and beautiful at the same time. They don't want to look at the cockroaches, yet can't seem to look away from the photo. I love when this happens.
My subject matter tends to be dark or bizarre. I do these photos or concepts for myself. I love working on my own concepts, its what now drives me. I follow wherever my imagination takes me. My subject matter is often influenced by cinema, as well as my lighting and storytelling. I have a few different styles. First, I love to create characters. Sometimes I see a person and typecast them for a particular role. Other times I get a character in mind and look for someone to play that part. Secondly, I use an avant garde fashion/glamour style, as I do not like my work to appear as "normal". Finally, my favorite ideas are the truly creative and twisted artistic concepts. These are what I love the most, but truly creative, original ideas are rare.
