I'm a clothing designer who started sewing at 12 and have spent my entire (whew! lengthy! I'm old!) adult life working in fashion and costume in New York and LA (movies), so I'm an accomplished "craftsman".
For the last 11 years I've lived on the island of Bali, in Indonesia, and had my own small company, Whirling Turban, selling exclusively online and fitting customers precisely, from a distance, via measurements and photos. Our work can be seen at WhirlingTurban.com. Whirling Turban makes couture dresses that are constructed in the most vintage-authentic manner possible.
I visit the U.S. every year and I try to do some photoshoots while I am there since the photo resources in Bali are so much more limited than they are in the U.S. But I'm very willing to work with talented folks in Bali if I can find them!
Austin is my second home, so I like to shot there, S.F. or L.A.
We've gotten lots of great pictures; we are not lacking for photos or willing models. What I am looking for is GREAT work; genuinely interesting, technically excellent, highly creative with a high concept spin.
I put a LOT of time into creating the clothes specifically for the shoot- I don't just grab something from stock and run to the beach to shoot it, and I don't just send outfits off anymore. Having worked as a professional in costumes I have found that I need to be present at the shoot to work the wardrobe. I'm a perfectionist and a detail person. If I commit to doing shoot with you, I am going to put everything I have into doing my part to help make outstanding shots.
I prefer studio shots to outdoors but I can be flexible depending on the concept. I like fashion shots that make reference to pinup shots, not pinup shots that we hope will work for us as fashion shots. But I don't want to do straight, cliche pinup genre shots and do not like to "recreate" faux historical; I'm looking for something more that is truly fashion.
If you are coming to Bali, great! Please let us know; we'd love to discuss doing a shoot here with you! However we require lots of planning time.
My business is still a labor of love; I do this for the love of the work and my craft, so I don't have a large budget. However, models are often eager to work with us for trade. I prefer TFP but let me know what you need and I will do my best to accommodate your needs.
I will guarantee you absolutely stunning, distinctive, unforgettable clothes to work with and a movie star fit. In addition, our website is popular and we get featured in magazines and blogs worldwide so there will be some worthwhile exposure.
Our designs are made one by one, usually to order and requires us to make a considerable investment in order to do a photo, so we need to be discerning about our collaborations.
