I'm a Scottish painter recently moved to Beijing who likes to work with live models, either drawing and painting from life or by first photographing and then painting the models. I really like photographing first as it gives me a wide range of more natural gestures than life-drawing allows and has the added bonus of producing photos that my models can use for their own portfolio.

I really enjoy the artist/model collaboration, as I never know where the session will take me or what the model has to offer. I think of the work I produce with models as "our" work, as I couldn't do it without them! I often start out with a specific idea and the model takes me in entirely different directions, truly inspiring me.

For what it's worth, I was an international model myself for many years (and many years ago!) based in London, Milan and Los Angeles and working all over the world. I made over 50 TV commercials and innumerable print campaigns. (partial list of credits below). I think this gives me valuable insight when working with models and I also freely offer the benefit of my experience to any aspiring models who want it. I'm always happy to offer portfolio critiques, only if requested. I can usually tell very quickly who has a chance of making it in this extremely competitive business, but then that's not always everyone's goal. A close friend in London (who was my agent) owns a successful model agency there, so I can also help with introductions there and elsewhere, for the right person.

I intend to contact local models on MM when I find someone with a specific look that may work for a painting, but since I'm also interested in collaboration, please feel free to get in touch if you want to meet, chat about the business, trade work for photos, etc. I can't promise to be available, but you'll always get a prompt and courteous response.

I'd also love to meet with other painters and photographers in the area and perhaps collaborate, since I'm not a professional photographer myself.
