About Me

I’m an international award-winning oil painter who teaches portrait and figure painting at The Art League School in the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Virginia.  While most of my non-class work has focused on commissioned portraits, I’ve recently begun broadening the scope of my paintings, creating works with far greater narrative content than simple portraits, but paintings still focused on people.

I work regularly with professional portrait and figure models for both my own work and the art classes I teach.  Typically, for classes alone, I hire four models a week during each semester for three-hour sets running up to five days.  I work regularly with experienced models and help introduce beginners to the experience of working as an artist’s model.

I'm passionate about my creative process and, although always professional, enjoy greatly working with models.  Working with models to create paintings is always a collaborative effort, one that I strive to make a great deal of fun.

Model Mayhem looks like an ideal forum within which to broaden my circle of professional contacts, hire top quality models, and share my expertise.

The art critics say:

"Ted Reed is one of the supreme masters of the technical aspect of classical realism.  They don't get much better than Reed when it comes to delivering superbly crafted portraits and representational work at the height of realism.  His subjects are elevated by the light in which they bathe but firmly placed in the corporal world; the light just offers a glint of the sublime."

-- Old Town Crier, “Gallery Beat,” December 2009

"This author is the first to call Reed, with solid justification, the Contemporary Vermeer."

-- Shauna Lee Arts Advisory, August 2008

"Reed paints . . . amazingly life-like visages that seem to live somewhere between the two- and three-dimensional worlds."

-- Falls Church News-Press, September 2008
