About Me

When it comes to hair colouring Abby Smith is second to none and one of the most exciting exponents of the discipline within the industry today. With over 20 years experience as both a colourist and technical educator, the award-winning 36-year-old has lent her skills to shows across Europe, employed for trade shows, TV shows, commercials, films and music videos and featured in a variety of magazines. Now employed at D&J Ambrose as European Technical Creative Art Director, she has worked with major colour houses including Wella for seven years and currently holding the esteemed role of exclusive European Guest Artist and Master Colour Expert with Wella. Most recently in 2014, she has been successful in becoming one of the Top 5 UK Grand Finalists in Creative Head magazine’s “Most Wanted Colour Expert” category and British Hairdressing Awards British Colourist of the Year.

Abby’s upward trajectory continues at a rate of knots, yet she retains the same hunger and passion for her craft that she had way back when she first began hairdressing as a teenager. Leaving the outback of Australia for Melbourne when she was 16 years of age, keen to quench her thirst for learning the ins and outs of the hair industry in a big city. 10 years on she relocated to London in 2004, in order to take her career to the next level.

In the 10 years that have passed since that big move she has been mentored by UK's best colourists including BHA Hall Of Fame's Christel Lundqvist, Jo O’neill, Jane Stacey, AJ Blackadder and Jayson Gray. She has also worked as a platform colourist alongside on stage with Darren Ambrose and the D&J Ambrose Art Team, Akin Konizi, the BHA Hall of Fame HOB Art Team, Darren Bain and more.

Thanks to her wealth of experience, Abby has deep knowledge of a variety of disciplines; from managing successful colour teams and freelance technical education to working on music videos and television, plus she’s made contributions to global campaigns for fashion companies, consumer advertising and major product manufacturers. Her clientele travel from all over the UK and Europe for an appointment, which have included celebrity clients Westlife, Geri Haliwell, Pete Doherty, Olivia Newton John and Pixie Lott, to working with globe trotting DJ’s Blond:ish and Kate Simko.

A visionary in her field of expertise, Abby doesn’t just work with oxidising colour, she also uses direct colours, pigments, watercolours, colour sprays, stencils and colour gels when getting creative. Her skills stretch beyond colouring hair, becoming a weft colouring specialist for session and avant garde work working alongside Darren Ambrose. It’s this broad range of skills that sets Abby head and shoulders above many of her contemporaries, and have made her one of the most in-demand colourists in the UK and Europe.

Her technical skills also range from commercial seamless highlighting and salon creative techniques to more freehand seasonal fashion colour including her own bespoke balayage inspired ‘Boho Luxe’ technique using innovative products such as Wella Freelights and Colour ID. Abby prides herself on advanced colour correction, pristine pre-lightening with classic and creative toning techniques to advanced fashion colour techniques including accentuating dimension, graphic colour placements and her own signature style of avante garde colour techniques with offbeat and unique palettes.

Her growing list of accolades includes Worldwide Toni & Guy Technician of the Year, while she has also been UK grand finalist in L'Oréal Colour Trophy and Wella Trend Vision competitions. In 2013, collaborating Darren Ambrose and the D&J Art team, saw Darren be successful in becoming a BHA UK grand finalist in the London Hairdresser Of The Year category and the D&J Art Team successful in becoming UK grand finalists for the Art Team Of The Year category. Fulfilling her role as an educator and mentor, Abby has also dedicated her time to collaborating with some of the UK's hottest rising star stylists, helping them win positions in the UK Fellowship FAME team, UK L'Oréal Colour Trophy Young Colourist, UK Generation Now, UK Young Guns and UK Wella Trend Vision.

Both her personal and collaborative successes have featured in top UK and European trade publications and online magazines, including the Hairdressers Journal, Creative Head, Professional Hairdresser, Estetica (Spain, UK and Italy), Tribute Magazine, Canadian Hairdresser (Canada), Salon Business, Your Hair Magazine, Surrey Brides, Hair’s How (Russia), Styling Magazine (Macedonia), Hair Magazine, Hairstyles Magazine, Mixmag, The Sun, ES Magazine, Marie Claire (Australia) and more.

Since joining D&J, her profile has skyrocketed and seen her involved in global trend and product campaigns for Wella in Hamburg and Berlin, working closely with the Wella Global Creative Team and High Profile Photographer Scott Trindle. The campaigns have also then been showcased to a full house at the Wella UK Grand Final at The Roundhouse in Camden, north London.

Abby’s progress has been boosted throughout 2013 working alongside Darren Ambrose by being invited to appear as a guest artists for Wella which has, so far, included trips to Helsinki, Stockholm, Hamburg and Berlin to inspire Wella Educators with their new colour release products and recreating the campaign looks. She has presented on the HJ and Fellowship stages at Salon International and pre-coloured models for the D&J Ambrose Pro Hair Live show in Manchester and Trend Vision Roadshow Showcase Tour throughout the UK. She is involved with the exclusive invite only ‘Wella Colour Club’, educates as a guest artist in London and Manchester for the Master Colour Expert Programme, as well as judging Wella Trendvision.

As you can probably tell, hairdressing and colouring hair is Abby’s true passion, it's what keeps her driven and she is constantly inspired by the world around her. Living in East London fuels this undying love for hair. ‘With the area becoming such a creative hub in the last few years, from street art to the often outlandish fashion sense of its inhabitants, my local area inspires her every day’.

She also takes inspiration from traveling regularly, visiting European cities. Berlin in particular, where she immerses herself in culture like art, film, fashion and the underground club scene. There she finds endless inspiration and foresight with regard to trends, colour palettes and forward-thinking techniques that feed back into her own creative output.

With so much experience and such a prosperous career, Abby could well rest on her laurels. However her inner fire continues to burn brighter than ever as she maintains a firm focus on being the very best in her field, while passing on her knowledge and skills to the next generation.

Abby Smith truly is in a class of her own.
