I am based on Vashon Island in the Puget Sound, close to both Seattle and Tacoma. After an extensive career in motion pictures, I am now concentrating seriously on my still photography, which I have continued to pursue since my university days. I primarily shoot medium format film and scan negatives/slides for digital output. I am a member of MM to conect with individuals who seek to create images of beauty, power, and expression. Clearly, my emphasis is on art and not commerce. Lately, in addition to more traditional optical photography, I have been exploring lens-less zone plate imagery. Zone plate photography yields a pictorial, almost ethereal image that has a painterly quality. In these times of greater and greater emphasis on high resolution, I believe the act of viewing is often lost in the hyper-clarity of HD images, and the art of photography suffers when the role of viewer becomes so passive. Zone plate imagery is one form that returns active engagement to the viewer, with the result of a more satisfactory experience and heightened insight. For the model, zone plates are a medium of expression allowing a further dimension to her/his portfolio.
