Aix is great, isn't it? A great college town!
Avignon is awesome. The Palais du Papes is a given, of course. I actually really enjoyed going across the river to St. Andre. Was a refuge of mine, so to speak. Very peaceful.
Near Avignon is also St. Remy--one of my FAVORITES. A phenomenal place to go to dinner there is called "Mistral Gourmand". If you go, tell the owner Jean that "JK from Atlanta" said hello!
Also near Avignon is Fontain du Vaucluse--another FAV of mine, and quite the little retreat. There is a beautiful (and tasty) source there--so drink up. The hostel there is also rather nice--take a night or two if you can! Oh--also happens to be where Plutarc was born!
Can also check out the old roman aquaduct, Pont du Gard. All three of these are within 30 minutes of Avignon.
God...there's soooo many things I could suggest, but those were my favorite little spots to go to. Beautiful scenery, nice people, great food, and easily accessible.
You've got to let me know how it goes! And be sure to look me up when you get back to SD--I wanna hear stories!
