About MeShooting entirely on film, I gravitate toward experimental, non-traditional portraiture. I’m drawn to the magic and alchemy of analog photography, and enjoy the solitude and serenity of the darkroom when I need a therapeutic release. If I'm honest with myself, happy and unexpected accidents are the coauthors of my photographs...and I like it that way.
Where many photographers fetishize their lighting diagrams, using elaborate and complex strobe setups in an additive attempt; my work consists of continually looking for ways to subtract and simplify mine. I'm interested in fermenting climactic ambiguity in my photographs, not all the gear fluff photographers usually like to ejaculate over. I'd like to think of myself as a creative collaborator alongside my intuition and not a technical fundamentalist, although, technique IS important, and I've cultivated mine for years.
Throughout my work you will find images that appear to have several layers to them. Sometimes I create these by shooting through a roll of film out in the field, rewinding it in the dark when I return home, and shooting through the roll again in a studio setting (sometimes months or years after the first exposures have been captured). Other times, I just make the double exposures as I'm shooting in the moment. Sometimes the compositions are planned, but most of the time I'm working spontaneously. I've found that when I think about it too much, I bankrupt any possibility for a money shot.
Although I can control many variables, there’s no way of truly knowing how a final image will turn out. Sometimes the frames wont line up quite right, or the exposures don’t quite blend together, or the composition is ruined by the other exposure. But I like shooting this way—it pushes me outside my comfort zone. Chance is a major element in my work and I welcome the uncertainty, the mystery, the struggle.
