Joy Hu (Chinese 胡歆宜; Pinyin: Hu Xinyi) born 20 March 1986) is a New York-based Canadian fashion designer. In addition to her role as principal designer for her exclusive line of designer gowns; she also designs custom couture fashions.
At age 5, Hu was designing dresses inspired by fancy dresses her father brought home from his international business travels abroad for her. Experiencing fashion from around the world played a role in developing her inspiration to create unique designs she sought after, but couldn't find in stores. Hu's first design was produced at age 13.
Hu attended Istituto Marangoni in Milan, Italy to study Fashion design. She has a master in Marketing, Retail Buying, Fashion Styling, and Digital Media Skills. She immigrated to Canada in August 2007.
Hu started her first clothing business at the age of 18, and launched her first store in China in 2007 and opened up her first showrooms in Toronto and New York City in 2008 and 2012 respectively. In 2012, she established the Joy Hu Collection (歆宜禮服) clothing label and her first store in Toronto opened on 1 December 2012.
Hu is mentored by Harry Harrison, Executive Director of the YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund, and a Mentee of the American Marketing Association mentor exchange program.
To date, Hu's designer dresses have been worn by celebrities, media personalities and models alike such as Miss Universe Natalie Glebova, Miss Jamaica Chantal Zaky, Jessica Caban, Angelina Pivarnick, Pooja Handa (CP24, Flare), Christie Livoti (Brooklyn 11223), Anjulie and Divine Brown.
Style and influences
Hu's work draws heavily from her favorite designers, Christian Dior S.A. and Valentino. Hu's pieces are handmade using high-end and often unusual European fabrics, employing a signature hand-embellishing techniques in each creation. Hu calls her personal style a "cocktail of romantic elegance with modern sexy chic twist, and a dash of diamond."
In addition to her primary role as principal fashion designer for her exclusive line of designer gowns; she also designs custom couture fashions and has recently expanded her collections to include more affordable and some casual pieces.

A practicing Zen, Hu contributes to various charities supporting women, children and fashion. She spends her time equally between her homes in Toronto and New York City.
