"Be daring, be different, be impartial, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creators of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary."
Welcome to my portfolio.
I'm a photographer from Venezuela, very open minded, articulated, outgoing, and liberal in a political and philosophical manner. Raised between the USA and Venezuela, and currently living in Iowa City. I received a degree in literature from Venezuela’s Central University, as well as my Master’s degree in Spanish literature from The University of Iowa.
The thesis for my undergraduate degree was an investigation of the fashion industry in Latin America, and thus I ended up working in fashion photography. Almost all of my work is an exploration of the readings I did -and continue to do- in the course of my research about fashion. Specially the notion of transsexuality, erotic and cultural identity in fashion photography. My undergraduate thesis considered fashion a cultural text -as in literature. An in-between space where textual and visual narratives intertwine while in the space of marketing and commerce. You can say that my passion for reading and writing transformed into another creative desire; photography.
Before coming to the US, I published articles in Lifestyle magazine like Gente In Magazine and Guia Platinum Magazine (http://www.guiaplatinum.com). Since I came to Iowa, I have been working as a photograpaher for publications in the area, including Little Village Magazine and The Daily Iowan. My investigation during the course of my PhD program continues to be about the fashion industry, so I would like to meet people from different aspects of the fashion world.
I rarely use photoshop or localized photo manipulation. Some people make really cool images with photoshop. But, its not my style. I work to create a real visual moment, and capture it in a click. I look for those that afford that statement a moment of thought and appreciation. I am also always looking to add erotism in my photos, weather they are for a fashion or editorial shoot.
I enjoy working with talented outgoing people who are incredibly committed to evolving their skill-set. A touch of crazy never hurst either.
I'm eager to get in contact with interesting models, hairdressers, fashion designers and fashion photographers from Latin-America and the USA.
Please contact me if your're interested in rates and availability.
I have very few conditions for working with me:
-Signing a release contract is required.
-Models should not come with ¨no nudity¨ rules. I prefer to work with models who do not have a problem with nudity, understanding that I am looking for an artistic expression. I usually do not require nudity in my photos, nor do the publications in which I publish, but I just do not like to start the creative process with pre-established limitations. I like to establish them myself, and I do establish ¨no nudity¨ for most of my projects, even erotic ones. I hope you understand.
-No inhibitions. We are professionals, and part of the creative process is to open up to one another to be able to create a great image.
-Sometimes I use film, which means models do not get a CD at the end of the day. One week for uploaded image files is more likely. Have patience. Patience is a great trait, more so if you are working with me. I know we live in an immediate result world, but that is not always good for art.
Among the themes that I explore in fashion photography, is the notion of transsexuality, cultural identity, the limits between commercial and fine art. I am interested in erotic and artistic photography, visually exploring different forms of sexual/erotic expression.
Feel free to give me your feedback, I always welcome comments and suggestions.
