In order to place one of your portfolio images as your avatar, instead of having the "NO AVATAR (newb)" image, click on [my stuff] in the top right-hand corner of your profile page and select [photos] from the drop-down list. Then select the photo you want for your avatar by clicking on the [Set as avatar] button next to the image.
