From an early age, Ryan Roberts knew he had a love for makeup. At the age of 12, he began exploring this love and doing makeup for his local community theatre, where he regularly frequented the stage as an actor. For five years he worked with many talented theatre performers until he left for college and continued to pursue his love for the stage, preparing for a career in the entertainment field.
At the age of 21, Ryan, having achieved various academic and theatrical goals including a KCACTF Best Actor Award nomination and several leading roles on the stage, began to look elsewhere for creativity. Luckily, this search led him to the world of makeup artistry after a friend, who was pursuing her own modeling career ambitions, asked him to do her makeup for a photo shoot, his first of many to come.
This moment was a defining change for Ryan. He continued to pursue the idea of being a makeup artist and began teaching himself in many different styles, many vastly different than the theatrical styles he was familiar with as an actor. Through many rigorous hours of reading books by artists such as Kevyn Aucoin and Scott Barnes, and voraciously watching hours of YouTube video tutorials, Ryan felt he needed to step to the next level with his desire.
Seeking to pursue an actual education in makeup artistry, Ryan applied to Makeup Designory, Los Angeles in 2008 where he was accepted. Unfortunately due to extenuating circumstances, he was not able to attend the school and instead found himself on the career path to being a professional ballroom and latin dancer. A career that lasted four years, but never tempered his love for makeup artistry.
In early 2012, Ryan made the decision to leave dancing and pursue his artistry career full time. After a few attempts to make it as an artist in his hometown, including applying to MAC Cosmetics at the local mall, Ryan knew he had to leave in order to make his dream come true. Finally, in September of 2012, Ryan made the courageous journey across country from Greenville, SC, leaving behind his family, and relocated to sunny Los Angeles, CA where he was determined to make his dream of being a makeup artist come true.
Almost immediately Ryan began seeking out any photographer he could work with and shoot with to improve his skills and build a reputable portfolio, as well as applied once again to MAC Cosmetics, where he was accepted. During his two years working for the company, Ryan learned many valuable skills and techniques, as well as developed ones he had been working on for years, gaining more knowledge and confidence than he could ever have in the classroom. Among his achievements with the company were honors like receiving application certification, advanced 1 certification, and being picked to participate in the southwest region’s Gallery Night along with only 7 other artists from the greater Los Angeles, Ventura, and Orange County areas.
Sadly, this amazing experience came to an end in late 2014 when Ryan decided to leave the company and accepted a job teaching theatre makeup, his first love, at E.I. School of Professional Makeup in Hollywood, CA. This decision, which turned out to be one of the best he made in 2014, led to many exciting opportunities freelancing in the industry and many great connections he had yet to experience, including becoming a part of photographer Fidel Gonzalez’s editorial team and gaining management representation with McIntyre Management under Joshua McIntyre.
Since joining the team and working closely with Josh and Fidel, Ryan has had work published in several magazines such as Fantastics, Alegria, Kai’Outi, and Heaven Has Heels magazine, been featured on several magazine covers, been part of several fashion shows for LA Fashion Week, as well as grown in strength and talent as an artist. Working closely with some of the best agencies in Los Angeles, Ryan continues to seek out creative projects and build his network, portfolio of work, and memorable experiences in the high fashion and print industry.
