ABOUT ME:
With a long family history of beauticians it wasn’t surprising that when time came to fill out college applications Jay Mayeux (“Jay”) found her self applying to a nearby beauty college.
“ I knew at an early age that the beauty business is where I wanted to be.”
Self motivation drove “Jay” to enroll herself at Arnold’s Beauty College in Fremont, California at the young age of fifteen. She spent the entire summer wet setting and pin curling, while working a part-time job as a beauty advisor for Estee’ Lauder. As an employee at Estee’ Lauder; one of the biggest makeup/skincare retailers in the world, “Jay” fell in love with makeup.
Four months after graduating high school, “Jay” had completed 1600 hours of schooling, passed her practical and was a licensed cosmetologist. From there she was forced to make a major decision, ‘what was she to do with her life?’
“I dreaded the thought of spending the rest of my life behind a desk.”
She then accepted a job at a day spa where she was able to build her eyebrow, eyelash, & make up skills. At the same time she also rented a station in her aunts’ hair salon, and struggled to establish a cliental.
“My first months to a year in the salon world was a struggle but defiantly a good struggle, I learned a lot”
Though it was tough, still at the tender age of eighteen “Jay” opened her first Salon, Vanity Lounge a hair studio in Richmond, CA. She was able to create a multicultural salon, which hosts a vibrant, yet relaxing environment. In her salon “Jay” specializes in hair extension as well as eyelash extensions. However, Vanity Lounge is more than a ‘hip’ salon and hangout for women. Her vision was offer something different to the underprivileged, high crime city of Richmond. Vanity Lounge provides upscale service and serves as a haven for the women of the community by embracing them.
“In the deprived neighborhood it gives the community something to be proud of.”
Along with running her salon “Jay” participates in local fashion shows and test shoots to build her portfolio. Her work can be seen on “The Marshaleen Martin Show” a gospel talk show, where she is the makeup artist for the host Marshaleen Martin. “Jay” is now working on her own makeup line as well as a cranial prosthesis company. “Jay” aims to pursue work in the fashion and print industries while watching her salon business grow.
“There are so many avenues in this business I aspire to try them all. Why not?”
