Spencer Susser began making films at a very young age. After graduating from high school, he became a commercial and music video editor, mentored by Academy Award winning editor, Angus Wall (Benjamin Button, The Social Network, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). He worked with some of the most sought after commercial and music video directors of that time, including Mark Romanek, Roman Coppola, and David LaChapelle.
Driven by his love of filmmaking, for the next 4 years Spencer worked 24/7, dedicating all of his time to editing, learning from the directors he worked with, and evolving into a filmmaker – basically attending his version of film school. By the age of 22, he had shifted his focus from editing back to directing. Within a short time he created an archive of music videos, commercials and short films.
In 2000, having the privilege of working alongside George Lucas, he directed “The Making of Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones”, the official behind-the-scenes documentary for the film. During his time on set, he forged long-term relationships that years later would lead to his role as a member of the Australian film collective, Blue-Tongue Films.
Spencer has directed music videos for musical artists including Lana Del Rey, The Veronicas, The Offspring, and many more. He has directed award winning commercials for Johnny Walker, Harley Davidson, Puma, Snapple, Nintendo, Ugg starring Tom Brady, and many more.
Spencer’s 2008 short film, “I Love Sarah Jane”, starring Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and continued on to play at over 60 film festivals. It has won many awards, including the highly acclaimed Canal + Award at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival.
In 2010, Spencer’s debut feature film, “Hesher”, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Natalie Portman, Piper Laurie, and Rainn Wilson premiered at Sundance Film Festival. Spencer won the “Best First Time Director” award at the Philadelphia Film Festival. Variety magazine named him in their “10 Directors to Watch” list and shortly thereafter the film was released going on to become an instant cult classic.
In 2013 Spencer was back at Sundance with a new short film, “The Captain” starring Taika Waititi (Boy), which he co-directed with Nash Edgerton. Both Spencer and Nash are members of The Australian film collective, Blue-Tongue Films, consisting of Spencer Susser (Hesher), Nash Edgerton (The Square), Joel Edgerton (The Gift), Luke Doolan (Miracle Fish), Kieran Darcy-Smith (Wish You Were Here), David Michôd (Animal Kingdom) and Mirrah Foulke (Dumpy Goes to the Big Smoke)
Spencer is currently in development with his next feature film.
