ON INDEFINITE HIATUS
I'm going on hiatus and refocusing my work. I am putting the nudes to the side for now. I suddenly decided to start a completely new body of work based on the sketchbooks I created literally while driving a cab in NYC in the 70s and 80s. The series has a working title of HACKED MEMORIES.
I will take off from the work I have been doing as long as is necessary to do another and different body of work, maybe two. I, and the work, need some shaking up. My friend Aeric said when everything looks great and it is all coming too easy, it's time for a new, tough challenge.
I am sad to say that I must cancel any bookings I may currently have. Keep an eye on my profile for when the ON HIATUS note comes down.
I will keep uploading work until both the Jonathan Herbert and Jonny Katz profiles are filled. The work is great: might as well get it seen.
I'M AN ARTIST. LOOK AT THE WORK.
On my blog I post new work when I get around to it. Much of the work on the blog goes well beyond the limits that can be posted in my MM portfolio:
Painting, I believe, is prayer; thus my work is the direct, 21st-century descendant of the medieval monkâs devotional vocation.
Further my approach to art is based on the understanding that the role of the artist is similar to that of the shaman in primitive societies. It is our calling to go where the rest of the tribe cannot, bring back the experience of those difficult spiritual realms and translate it for general consumption.
For example I, a member of our necrophobic society, immerse myself in my wife(apostrophe)s journey into death; the paintings that resulted are gut-wrenchingly powerful and deep, but ever so more gentle than THAT GOOD NIGHT which claimed her.
Alternatively, in a society conflicted about sexuality, I fan the flames of libido, drink in the eroticism of my models, and pour that energy and experience onto canvas and paper. I see beauty in desolate city streets and agony in a rose opening under a twilit sky.
We each create our own world. When we intersect we create another.
The trinity of sex, death and redemption are the themes I explore in my art.
