Born in Moscow, Mila was travelling around the world from an early age with her ballet choreographer mother. Brought up on classical ballet she had starred in her mother’s major productions since she was 5 years old and toured Russia, Europe, Japan and the USA with a troupe of young dancers. At 19 Mila left Moscow for France to pursue her passion for photography.
After a year of absorbing Provencal sunshine, French culture and language in Cézanne’s town of Aix-en-Provence she went on to study for a BA (Hons) Photography at Icart-Photo Ecole de Photographie de Ville de Paris. In Paris Mila has exhibited her portraits of the bohemian inhabitants of Montmartre; and a series of her photographs were showcased during the Month of Photography in Paris.
Returning to Moscow Mila has been working as a freelance fashion and portrait photographer for the biggest Russian publications including Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar, Yes, Prime Traveller and Grazia. She has also collaborated with a plethora of actors, musicians, ballerinas and fashion designers.
Since completing her MA in Fashion Photography at the London College of Fashion University of the Arts London Mila has worked for Young British Artist Mat Collishaw and shot portraits of art, music and fashion mavericks including The Prodigy, Kokon to Zai, James Jarvis, David Koma, Tata Naka and Andrei Arshavin among others. Her photographs regularly grace the pages and covers of Hooligan Magazine and she has staged exhibitions in London, Paris, Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Kiev. Her most recent work entitled BIOLUMINESCENCE was showcased at The Book Club in London in September 2011.
For the last four years Mila calls London home, where she lives in Hackney Wick in a like-minded community of artists and free spirits. “London is a whirlwind of a city, always inspiring me to be brave and to experiment. I felt straight away that everything here is full of inspiration and very soon as if by magic I found friends and like-minded people and my projects took off in a completely new and exciting direction” – Mila Nesterova
