My name is Jay. Photography is my passion and something I do for the pure joy of creating art and working with creative people. I love working with people and constantly strive to to improve my own technique and to find new ways to bring out the best in others. I have set up Lightsource Studios, Inc. for professional freelance assignments in portrait, fashion and event photography. Rates are provided upon request.
I am interested in selective TFI (Time for Image) collaborations with models, makeup artists, stylists and students interested in Studio Art, Theater Arts or Photography, and anyone who is creative, likes to get their pictures taken and would like to engage in a mutually enriching artistic experience. No prior experience is required.
I have completed an Associates Degree in Photographic Imaging as well as a BA with a double major in Studio Art and Art History. I have also taken advanced classes in Fashion, Portrait and Night photography at The International Center of Photography.
In my photographs I seek to create a look that is contemporary and edgy yet classic and formal. I draw my inspiration from ancient and pre-modern periods of art. Ancient Greeks and Romans are unmatched in their depictions of the human form as in the classic
Discobolus. Egyptians depicted each part of the human body from the angle of view from which they were best defined (faces and legs were shown in profile, while eyes, torso and hands were shown from the front). Among more recent artists some of my favorites are
Johannes Vermeer,
Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres and
John Singer Sargent. I always remember
Henri Cartier-Bresson when I shoot more candid at events. I like all the lines and forms in my images to be esthetically pleasing in a classical sense yet I want my pictures to be from the present time.

NOTES FOR TFI COLLABORATORS: PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY

Business issues:
All models are expected to sign a Model Release so that we can legally use the images from the shoot. I will retain the image copyright and we will both have rights for commercial use of selected images for our portfolios and our own self-promotion. Images obtained from the shoot are to be displayed in their original form. If you have any special concerns or stipulations please discuss these issues with me prior to the shoot.
PROOF OF AGE IS REQUIRED FROM ALL MODELS AT THE TIME OF THE SHOOT. ALL MODELS UNDER THE AGE OF 18 MUST HAVE A PARENT OR GUARDIAN PRESENT AT THE SHOOT.
Your Images:
TF collaborators will get an agreed number of images from the shoot. On an average it takes about half an hour to fully retouch and finish each image that you receive from me. So if you get 10 images from a 5-hour shoot I have actually spent 10 hours on the project. You will have commercial rights to use these images for your self promotion.
Unretouched Images:
The reason that photographers capture many images is to make sure they get some that are perfect for use. Unretouched images are actually like preliminary sketches made for a painting and really do not represent my completed work. However, you will receive small versions of all unretouched images watermarked as proofs so that you can select your desired images and keep private records of your modeling techniques.
Scheduling:
I usually schedule my shoots several weeks in advance. Please do not be a no show or try to reschedule at the last minute, this is really not cool and totally unprofessional.
Wardrobe and Makeup:
You will be providing your own wardrobe for the photo shoot. You need to be prepared to do your own makeup or you can bring your own makeup artist to the shoot.
Working with me:
Photography takes time. It takes about 4 to 5 hours to capture 3 different looks. I like to have all body parts, hair, garments, sets and lights perfectly arranged, which means you should expect a lot of direction with posing, readjustments and frequent retakes when you work with me.
