It may be rude to stop and stare but Nigerian born, American pop sensation, Nenna Yvonne, leaves you no choice. Her latest single ‘You and I’, scouted by Core DJ Tony Neal himself,has been recognized as the hottest break through Summer record by an indie artist and has been played on various FM mix stations across the country and internationally. Her previous self-written single, “Go Around”—a sultry, electro-pop rave-dance record—boasts hundreds of thousands of spins and remixes on the internet as well as the featured theme club song on the hit NBC television series, ‘The Mentalist’. Three minutes of succulent ear candy, it’s not only the product of a diverse musical upbringing, but a harbinger of more cutting-edge crowd pleasers to come. Nenna Yvonne started her songwriting and modeling career at the age of 16. She enrolled in various school recitals and theatre plays. As a young girl, her disciplined schedule positioned her for the work ahead. Before reaching the age of 16, Nenna Yvonne had performed on stages such as Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. Her rigorous schedule with education and the arts kept her busy and curious with her songwriting abilities.
“I think it’s hereditary,” Yvonne laughs about her ambition. “I was pushing for this since I was a little girl. I’m stubborn in a sense, and I’m not the kind of person that’s going to look back and regret that I didn’t try something.”
Although the precocious Yvonne studied classical, chamber music, sight-singing, gospel and jazz, she was quick to embrace modern pop songwriting sensibilities. In her teens she began experimenting with diary entries that would shape her as a lyricist.
Nenna wanted to make the arts her calling despite people’s warnings. Every dime she could save up went into developing her sound, style, craft and writing abilities.
The challenge was a great one and there were many risks at hand. Nenna spent many of her days after school in Columbus Circle and Times Square where she wrote diary entries. The diversity of people and culture really influenced her journals and she then decided in building a make shift home studio and creating her own original songs. She decided to work with a few local producers and eventually recorded enough material to submit for a music deal with Sony Red.
But it didn’t stop there. Nenna wanted to prove that her songwriting skills were just as influential as her fashion abilities. She went on to win Indie International Songwriter of the year, SESAC Abe Oleman scholarship songwriter of the year and USA Songwriter of the year 2 years consecutively. Nenna has been scouted by many talent agents all over the world regarding her performance and songwriting abilities. With placements on CMT, Lifetime, The Gay Network, MTV, SAE, NBC, MLB, Music Monster, Spike TV, VH1, VisiKard, Android, The Golf channel and Disney, Nenna Yvonne proved to music execs everywhere that her songs were worth the wait.
Nenna has been featured in numerous leading music industry publications and hip hop blogsuch as ThisIs50 including Billboard Magazine and SESAC’s magazine.
