I believe that lighting and photography are inseparable, and so I have concentrated on learning about light. Natural light, coloured light, harsh light, soft light, white light, darkness. I'm fascinated with the old-style Hollywood studio portraits of the 1930s and 1940s, those black and white shots of Marlene Dietrich and Carole Lombard where the model's face seems to emerge from darkness into a pool of light.
Still, my name's Ashley and I'm a 32-year-old adult man. I live in Wiltshire, England, and I hate being bored. Photography is basically my hobby, but I'm good at it. I started to take it seriously in January 2008 and you are looking at the results. So far I have met a lot of interesting people, and I have shot them.
I'm not signed to any agency, I don't have any professional credits, I haven't tried to sell any of my work so far. Typically I arrange a shoot in a local studio, and whether it is paid-for or not I give the model a DVD with all the pictures in their original state, plus the best two dozen or so run through Photoshop. I don't have a make-up artist or a wardrode. I don't have a big mansion in the country. I do however have a pair of dancing feet.
The photographers that impress me most and whose names I can remember include Katja Ehrhardt, Perry Gallagher, Kevin Hundsnurscher, that Lithium Picnic Chap, Christine Kessler, Jam Abelanet, Alain Paris, and Andre Brito. John Swannell. Didier Carre. And lots of others. Ken Marcus. Paul Outerbridge Jr. Martin Perreault. Bob Carlos Clarke.
