Hey everyone,
I was thinking of trying to organize some sort of meet up/photo shoot for models, photographers, etc in the Boston area. This is just a feeler to put out and see if anyone is interested.
Right now, I'm not sure if I'd charge for the event or not. If we had to rent a location, then I probably would charge a small fee to cover the costs of the meet up. If we chose an outdoor location it could potentially be free.
So I'm looking to hear thoughts and ideas about how many people are interested in this sort of thing, what they'd be willing to pay, what type of location they'd have in mind, etc.
I'd have all my gear: lights, cameras, computer, etc. I think it would be a great way to make some connections, meet some new people and learn a thing or two about posing, lighting, composition, or whatever else.
So, get back to me...let me hear your thoughts.

oops, that was supposed to say one vote for March 16th.

I've been to classes where multiple photographers shot with multiple models before. It worked out great and everyone got a lot of great images. The thing is, we all have to play fair as childish as that sounds, haha. Take a few minutes with a model, shoot some ideas, use other photographers as assistants. Then when you've gotten a bunch of shots step aside and rotate into the role of an assistant and let someone else shoot some of their ideas. While you're assisting you'll come up with more ideas for shooting more poses and you'll rotate again eventually.
The last class I did there were probably about 15 photographers and 2 models. I think if we try to keep the photographer to model ratio around 4:1 or 5:1, then that would be perfect.
I think 2 or 3 models would be great (I've already got 2 interested) and then between 8 and 15 photographers (depending on the number of models).
So far I've got one vote for March 15th?
As for venue...lets try to come up with some ideas. I don't think we necessarily need to get a studio. I'm sure there are places around town we could use. Might have to get some permission. If it's nice out, shooting outside would be perfect.
I will make sure there is definitely socializing time for everyone for future work and ideas.

Do you try to make a meeting where multiple photographers shoot multiple models? That'd require a pretty big space with several sets of studios. I think some models are not very comfortable with that... Also, the photographer with the loudest voice will get all the model's attention, too. I think a few photogs/models giving "powerpoint presentation" of each person's work and what they want to do next, or even what interests them, may be better in finding right model/photog team for a later day to work together. Plus, plenty of socializing time. I can't do 14. Maybe I can do 15. Sunday is probably a bit better. Let me know if you need any help.

I'd be interested!

There seems to be a little interest in this...so I'm going to try to set a date and see if that gets some more interest. For me, the best time would be the weekend of March 15th and 16th. I have a concert to shoot that Friday, so we can't do the 14th.
I'll try to pinpoint a place and a time once I get some more reader feedback. I basically want this to be oriented toward modeling and taking pictures, not a just a social gathering.

I would be very interested in going!

I appreciate your feedback. I don't think it has to be strictly educational. There are a million ways to break it up. There could be different groups. One group could be for beginner instruction, midlevel instruction and advanced instruction, one could be for shooting specifically.
Or it could be, the first half hour to an hour would be a meet and greet. Then we could have a half hour to an hour of instruction. then it could be all out shooting. We can give the model's breaks. We could also bring along some music and stuff to keep the excitement up.
Also, I forgot to mention that this would also be open to hair/makeup wardrobe people if they were interested as well.
I'm still in the planning phase and trying to nail down a format. I definitely appreciate your feedback and you're right about the advanced photographers probably getting bored.

I was thinking for some time to create a casual meeting where some people who have specific ideas (e.g., project concept) give brief presentations, and connect with models who are interested in the project, or vice versa. Of course, the presentation could include something about the studio/lighting/editing techniques, and while I believe those topics may be of good educational values to beginning photographers, I don't think models are interested in them, and experienced photographers would fall asleep. I think technical matters are probably better left out for workshops or separate meetings. What do you think?
