In case you missed it, the next Obscura is October 17th @ QXTs in Newark NJ. There are very few restrictions being put down this time and it is coming together already. I hope you'll be able to attend or at very least participate in some fashion.
Obscura is, in its most basic form, a celebration of the counter culture. While it has a lot of the classic factors of a normal club night such as DJs and fashion; Obscura is anything but typical. The DJs spin everything from EBM to industrial to deathrock to new wave and post punk to expeirmental and noise.
The fashions are showcased but not on the runway. We create scripted performances relevant to the fashion designer chosen! The girls act out the short play usually to a soundtrack and it helps to show the functionality of the wares. We've done everything from streetwear/punk to fetish to neovictorian/steam punk.
My personal favorites are the performance art portions. Last time we did a play piercing live on stage where we pierced full peacock feathers into a girls back. I mean I sit back and dream this stuff up but seeing it was beautiful. This time the studio's performances are going to push a lot of boundaries and societies idea of a typical aesthetic. In addition, I will also be doing an hour long audio/visual performance piece.
Last but certainly not least is the visual arts. Last time I hand selected about 50 nationally and internationally acclaimed artists to show between 3-5 images. We had close to 200 images from artists like Lithium Picnic, Steve Prue, Ted D'Ottavio, Debbie Rotkowitz, Photos By Vance, Dastardly Dave, Rana X, Gary Breckheimer, and Kencredible to name a few. This time we're going to have a digital gallery installation, created by yours truly and will showcase close to 100 different visual artists. And here is where you come in...
I am looking for you to digitally submit work for review. The images submitted will become part of a site specific installation piece designed and assembled by The Fall Studios at the next Obscura. The images will be randomized on 5 (or more) LCD screens and accompanied by other screens and visuals to complete the sculpture. I will also be inviting a handful (probably about 40) as well. Every image will be watermarked with the artists name and title, so the viewers will know who is who. In addition there will be a pamphlet/catalog that will give additional info (website, state and city of residence) and a bio/artist statement.
- Deadline for submission is August 31st. Please email either a zip/rar file or a link to a directory with all requirements to email@example.com
- Submit between 3-5 images. Along with either a short artist statement or bio.
- All images must at least 150dpi and 480X720 pixels (I'd prefer them larger but that's the smallest).
If you are interested but need more information, please feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I look forward to your participation in this endevour.
