I'll admit, I entertained the thought of posting ones not as bad but I noticed (going through my old pics) I was usually more light handed so everything just looked like natural makeup, not as drastic as the one above. So I can truly say this is my most embarrasing pic since I started. *By the way this pic was from the first time Luis picked up a camera to shoot anything but our kids and nature!

Imagin bad makeup from 20+ years ago.. now THAT is scary! https://www.clicksmilies.com/s1106/sprachlos/speechless-smiley-040.gif

LOL! My worst of the worst pics are not even in my computer they are on an old computer I have stored in my basement. Funny story a couple of weeks ago, my daughter had one of her friends over, now this friend loves makeup and is totally fascinated over me being a mua. So she asked my daughter if she could see my portfolio.

Now my daughter isn't my biggest fan I'm just her pain in the butt mother so she just grabbed the first portfolio she saw in the freakin basement.
The pics were when I first started I was the photographer, no edits, point n shoot camera. The makeup was THE WORST!! So I came into the room and saw the book I practically ripped her arms off grabbing the book. I was soooo pissed. I took the portfolio aka a photo album sad and threw it in trash. Then I thought about it and decided to retrieve it from the trash and stored it away just to remind myself to keep my eyes on the prize.

This was the first time I ever put makeup on anyone else and took a picture.  It was for my coworkers' prom.  I had no foundations at all and had to use what the girls brought with them and I couldn't get the hang of using my tiny Dermacolor palette on the girl on the left.  They were both really happy though.

My very first fashion shoot (I did a lot of "glamour" that I just won't post, because I don't think I can crop those well enough.. ahem..).

From 1999, I think.

I've accomplished a lot in the year and a half I've been building my portfolio, but I've still got a long ways to go. I'm only now doing shoots where I am ecstatic about the results, and I'm still working on meeting the right people and making good contacts with photographers, hair stylists, wardrobe stylists, etc etc. It's taken a LOT of hard work to get where I am, and I'm not where I want to be yet, so I've got years of more hard work. I'm looking forward to it, though. big_smile

And these are bad...because... ?.... I happen to like them... but then again... taste is subjective, is it not?

Well, if you were to take a look at my website, you'd see that I still, in fact, do work that is "creative and expressive". And that's not really the point. It's all about the execution, photography, model, attention to detail, concept, etc...everything that makes a good picture that we MUA's learn through practise/trial and error. No magazine would dream of publishing my old images, but the newer ones actually look more like a picture that you would find in a fashion/beauty magazine.

It typically takes artists a while to do fabulous clean beauty work- let alone clean creative make-up.

You can see a trend with a lot of super green artists and it's a very student-y look. I have TONS of these kinds of images from when I was a student:

https://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y38/rrdesimone/MUD/mud22a.jpg
https://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y38/rrdesimone/MUD/mud29.jpg
https://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y38/rrdesimone/MUD%20PHOTOSHOOT/mudshootcolor3.jpg

Similar to what a lot of design students go through- i.e. a skirt made out of ties.

I love your new stuff.

Thanks, Rachel! big_smile I like my new work too; I don't really think it's uncreative or anything like that. Maybe there's a lot of netural colors *shrug*, but that took mad skills (haha). I will admit that I decided to have fun after I was out of school and do crazy stuff, but I quickly realised that it wasn't getting me proper work and I hadn't perfected the basics, like natural beauty, which is what makes or breaks a make up artist at the end of the day. So, when I moved to NYC, I made it my mission to update my book with more natural/classic makeups.

I have a shitstorm of school pictures like that too! Star sequins around the eyes, sprinkles on the lips...Oo, and yes, I'm totally guilty of rocking the feather around the eyes too. Hehe.

I just looked at your website and you've got some AMAZING stuff on there!

Why not edit your post to add in your NEW colorful crazy stuff along with the beautiful natural makeup?

It seems to me that the people who like the crazy stuff are looking at the flashi-ness of it, where the makeup artist is looking at the technique of it.  Two totally different things.  I get attached to work I have that took a lot of effort, or required a lot of creativity, but then I realize that maybe what I'm seeing isn't what other people are seeing.  haha.  Probably why so many straight-out-of-school mua/hairstylists are all about how CRAZY and CREATIVE their work can be and less about the solidness of their technique.

just my 2 cents

well, in no way am i an MUA, but i did go to school for cosmetology, and i do very much enjoy doing makeup and you know what i noticed?

most of the things that are being posted as "bad" are things that are either, bright, colorful, adventurous, etc.

and the things posted as "good" are for the most part more natural looking.

i dont think anyone was bad, i just think the trends changed, because time went on, and now in retrospect you think you were bad, but thets just IMO. =]

I'm going to school to be a MUA and just looking at these pictures is inspiring. You may think they are terrible, but I'm learning what not to do and honestly, thinking of ways to incorporate the "bad" into a good look.
