I'm hoping to hear from shorter female models, have you still been able to get work as a model despite not being as tall as the ideal model? Which areas have you found work in? Swimwear, lingerie, fine art, sports fashion? I'm curious to know so I can focus on areas I have a chance in!

Hair modeling!  And if in Japan, catalogues, commercials, music videos, camera company websites, more.

I'm 5' 5" and I do find paid work.
I'm mainly a nude model, so the majority of my incomes comes from fine art nudes, conceptual nudes, glamour-oriented shoots and so on.
Oh..I'm also hired for clothed stuff too. I'm into fetish/alternative fashion wink

It's not just about height.

This should really be in Critique if you'd like opinions on what styles are available to you specifically.

I'm am what I would call very short a 4'10". What is odd, in my experience, is that a lot photographers really don't care as much as you'll be told on here. I see there being 3 reasons for that:
1) I'm not doing fashion/runway
2) They know how to shoot me to make me look taller and given that I'm proprotionate, it isn't that difficult (at least so I've been told)
3) They are mostly shooting as a hobby or for a small business
Again, that's been my experience.

Now, if you're wanting to get paid, that's a little different. Right now, I have 4 paid shoots lined up. They're all nude. But in my case, they aren't wanting Playboy nude, they all want something different. One owns an apparently successful studio and needs sample boudoir style nudes, another just wants to shoot nudes for his port, and the third and fourth are a mixture of port work and what I suspect are better GWCs (the nice kind). One wants art nudes exclusively, the other wants more glamour (his work looks like a cross between Playboy and more artistic glamour nudes if you can picture that). Some of them also want to do lingerie and swimwear, etc.

If you do get into nude modeling, I recommend asking around here for advice. I got lots of good advice when I started in about a month ago.

I'm a short model and have done so many different types of modelling. I have also done a couple of fashion shows...although height for them was not an issue as they were looking for smaller models.

Do what you enjoy doing smile Experiment in different areas of modelling and find out what you like to do smile

I'm 5'4 as well, and have managed to find a lot of paid work over the past 10 years that I've been modeling. Some of these include promotions/product sampling, billboards, magazines, commercials, calendars, fit modeling, and mannequin modeling. Basically, I've been able to get hired for just about any and every job that I want to do. The only thing that I've found that my height limits me on is runway. It's really all about convincing the person doing the hiring that you are the most punctual, reliable, professional person for the job. :-)

Oh, and if you have pretty hands or feet or any other body part, there's always parts modeling. For example, you can be the hand that's in a "Leo Diamond" add, or if you have pretty eyes you could try to do an add for Acuvue contacts... the options are endless. :-)

I'm 5'1
I've found work as an art, glamour, and commercial model. Commercial only because of the relationships I've developed with photographers. Mainly I get hired for my art and glamour modeling. It's all good, it pays the bills. Lately, I've been getting a lot of messages about bondage and fetish work also. Therefore, I've been entertaining the idea of spreading to that genre

I'm 5' 2", and I look like I'm at least four years younger than I am. It works to my advantage when people want models who look like they are in high school. I get alot of TF* stuff, nothing paid, but I'm not asking to be paid.

At 5'2", the only feasible options for me are: nude modelling, glamour, adult work, portrait/headshots, hair and commercial/lifestyle. Considering the only real big moneymakers are the first three and I do none of them, I'm sticking to my day job, and this is just a hobby that pays once in a blue moon.

I'm a 5'4" hobbyist. I do what I would like for the sake of art and funtimes.
My pink hair limits me for commercial shooting but if I were to change it back I would do better there.

I've only been shooting bondage and fetish for a couple months now, but it's the most fun I've ever had. It's a blast, and it allows room for more tackiness and ostentatious behavior than other genres. When I was exclusively an "art model," I used to get so sick of people always saying, "Let's keep it tasteful." Seem like people who do fet work are more open to trying crazy-fun concepts.

I tell all the models who want paid work. Shoot with a GWC. They pay well and are harmless.

That's not entirely true (I'm speaking in fashion/commercial terms here - I'm not going to pretend I have knowledge of other areas in Asia!). When referring to "shorter models" it's more likely that it's in terms of models who are just that little bit too short for fashion (i.e.: around 5'7"-5'8") in other parts of the world. As Asians are typically a shorter race of people, there is a greater allowance for those who are just on the 'potentially too short' line of things. 5'9"+ models still do very well and are preferred.

However, that being said, shorter models do have potential for paid work in:
- glamour
- alternative
- art modelling
- parts modelling
- some commercial acting
- nude work

smile best of luck! smile

I'm 5'4". I shoot almost 100% paid, almost 100% glamour. I've also done some men's magazine work but nothing too adult.
If you're okay shooting with amateurs and you don't mind nudity your height won't matter and you can get plenty of paid work.

I'm 5'2 and I get some paid work. I do a lot of TF's cause I still feel like I'm learning. I've got paid for fashion and implied nudes. I make good money from retouching as well.

I get offered a fair amount of paid work (but I do pick and choose, because to me, the work you put out is more important than being paid..)

I haven't paid a single dollar for the development of my portfolio..which is good considering my friends who are agency represented have paid thousands for theirs when they started out.

I'm lucky to get a good range of things. Of course, not being restricted and willing to do nudes really helps me. I get hair, makeup/beauty, nude, even fashion shoots. I don't know what I was aiming for really, so I kind of made myself the most well rounded model possible. Of course fashion is not something I am highly considered for, but I do get enough of it, considering I am only 5"4.5

You just need to figure out your strengths and weaknesses, and go from there.

I earned a living for 2 years doing only modeling in Tokyo.  Here's what I did:

1) Taught English
2) Modeled part-time, built experience
3) Quit teaching
4) Modeled full-time

Glamour: none
Nude: none
Runway: about 5 or 6 times when the client wanted my specific look and didn't mind the height
Work for free: almost never

Lucky?  Maybe.  But somehow this shorty got to be one of the most requested foreign models in town.  Weird experiences, plenty.  Good experience overall, for sure.

Just be smart and kind, and find the light.  Maybe being a little self-conscious helps, too.
So... good luck!  Just do it if you like it.  You can also fib your height by an inch, mostly no one notices.

Isn't that also because the height requirement is different I think? Aren't Asians typically smaller? I've only known one model from Japan who was like a little over 5 ft and she was a successful model over there.

I am the same height as you:) dont let anyone tell you youre limited...big freaking deal if we dont do high-fashion runway or commercial stuff - those models have to retire at 22 for being "too old", (even tho theyre still hot and should still be modeling...) and its boring. If youre proportioned, have an amazing look, can pull off many different looks,  and work with decent photographers, then it doesnt matter how tall you are...its the photos that are important:)

This is just my two cents:)

Eva (5'4" and a full time model - that doesnt do full nudes)

I'm 5'3 As long as you take great pics and do what you love thats whats important. The work will come but it may not be runway or high fashion. I've done promo work with celebs and the occasional bikini shoot that seem to pay best. Try finding an agency and dont get discouraged over the height issue, as long as your look is unique marketable what matters most. You gotta have the drive and location too though

5'2 here.  Nudes, implied, clothed were paid for.  Runway wasn't but I did it a few times and I like it!  Short models have to be dressed like the taller ones wink Of course, I would like to be part of an agency, it would be easier to find work.
