These words get used on Mayhem quite often... Never found a widely accepted definition anywhere though. Here's mine... Playboy:Includes full nudity but no spread/open legs or spread/open butt cheeks... Any girl/girl pics are smiling/playful only... Not erotic/sexual. Absolutely no boy/girl. Absolutely no "pink". Absolutely no toys or penetration. Penthouse:Includes full nudity with some spread/open legs and spread/open butt cheeks... Some close-ups of body parts. Some "pink". Girl/girl can include kissing, simulated licking and erotic/sexual poses and expressions. Usually not explicit though. Boy/girl only for editorial. Not for feature layouts and certainly not explicit.(No penises.) No toys or penetration. Hustler:Includes full nudity with plenty of spread/open legs and spread/open butt cheeks. Some close-ups of body parts. Plenty of "pink". Toys and actual penetration a.o.k. Girl/girl and boy/girl will include very explicit contact, toys, penises, penetration and ejaculation and sometimes, urination. By most standards,Hustler is porn. Penthouse is erotica. Playboy is nude glamour. All these words/terms get used daily on Mayhem yet have many definitions...And don't forget "Fetish". What's your definition???

I agree with nearly all of this. Except the concept on erotica. In our term "Erotica" would be something as simple as a nipple slip or a sheer blouse. This is hard to explain to some of the models that say "Nothing erotic" yet they do full or implied nudity. But when you get down to it one person's pornography is another's erotica, and vice-versa.

easier playboy = classy penthouse = skanks that are trying to be classy hustler = skanks we should treat all the models like they're classy.... but when you treat the classy models like they're skanks...you should have your ass beat...for real...

Since this was directed to the models, i'm wondering what their perception of the different "styles" is. If you mention "Penthouse style" in your profile,(or Playboy,or Hustler) do you agree with my definitions??? This could be valuable to hundreds of Mayhemers... Both photographers AND models.

I completely agree with what you wrote and will use it when talking to photographers about nude shoots now if i can just figure out fetish and bondage :S

very plain and straight forward, excellent thread. i'd like to add another to the list, which i often read, and that is MAXIM style. personally i don't use full nude on my site, that's just me, i do respect those that do. i do however erotica or implied in some cases, if the model feels up to it, for the most part they do. in the near future i will be trying to do more classy shots in whichever format.

Having worked for all three companies and knowing most of the photographers, editors and art directors for many years, I am not sure that I can agree with such a simple description. All three companies produce hardcore porn. Playboy spends more money than the other two combined in porn production. Penthouse has toned down their level of erotica in the last five years considerably. Hustler is Hustler . . . nothing new there in years. What you expect is what you get. What you see in all of these magazines is only a fraction of what is actually shot and the harder images are often used online in their websites. As far as I know . . . the publisher of Playboy has slept with many more of his models than anyone at Hustler or Penthouse. Everyone has their own definition of 'sleaze' KM

Since I have no issues with sexuality... I think it's admirable for any model to choose Playboy, Penthouse or Hustler style.

Playboy is great , again way over airbrushed. These girls are all the same, i have seen pink in Playboy, not spread but i have seen full on lips. Porn is porn. Sexually suggestive. When was the last time a male looked at Playboy and says " WOW! What a great looking Chase lounge she is on" It is softcore PORN Penthous is medium some hard, Hustler all Hard porn Its all porn.

Doug sticks his foot on mouth according to how he feels about women , he has two girls that I know for a fact that have spread their legs in front of Cameras doing hard porn in his port. There is one who has performed Boy/girl as well. So according to Doug himself he admits he shoots Skanks. Take a look at Red Chair! - I love Red Chair.

I know for a fact that Frankie was NOT recruited from either of those two institutions. She is one of those odd ones that got her start in the Astronaut program at NASA and dropped out because her pressure suit wasn't stylish enough and only came in one color. KM

I see a lot of spread legs, just no spread lips in Playboy. When some one mentions Playboy, I think current issues, not 20 or 30 years ago. So I think it is just better to not use confusing names. I can't agree with these definitions. To limited to experience and opinion, rather than facts. Just ask the model.

Hey Ken Marcus, I'm really flattered that you took the time to contribute to this...really. Your work has been very influential for me... In fact, one of the reasons i became a photographer... Thank You. But really, don't you beleive that each magazine has a defineable style??? Many of the Mayhem models think so... Really, you are the person most qualified to make things clear... Thanks.
