Can anyone please verify if this guy is a tog for Playboy? Some things have not rung true, for example he goes on about Photoshop, but I thought Playboy refused to use it.I just want to check, before I travel to Manchester to shoot.

Thanks people in advance

Model Mayhem is not Playboy and cannot do such verifications for you. Playboy has been retouching images as far back as the Paleozoic era. You need to do a better job of check references than asking in the forums. Rules prevent anyone from saying anything negative about other members.

You've got the "look" for Playboy!  I am sorry that I don't know the photographer, nor can answer if he is legit or not.   But I'm sure somone here can!

Have you called or written Playboy and asked them to verify?

After all, they're the only ones who can...

I don't think the photographer in question is a member here.

Does not really matter. Anyone saying he is or is not a Playboy photographer here does not help her. I doubt she has even verified he is who he claims to be. I can say I'm David Mecey and it'll verify with Playboy. All that proves is David Mecey is a contributing photographer for Playboy.

It seemed a good place to start, seeing that he approached me via the site. Sorry I bothered. I just wondered if anyone knew of him.

If he contacted you here can you start by checking with others in his area, as well as models and stylists he has credited in his portfolio.

However, your best bet would be to contact Playboy direct.  If he's shooting for them, they'll be able to verify.

ETA: It might be a good idea to read the forum rules.  They're linked at the top of the forum page.

I'm sorry, Pat, I googled and even though this is not an "outting" exactly, this thread should be lock and deleted.  This person is indeed a member of MM.

OP, you will have to use other resources than to post asking about him here because we are not allowed to "out" ... or say.

No, it's not that you did a terrible thing by asking, it is that it is against the rules to "out" a model or photographer member in the forums.  In other words, you are going to have to contact people near him, google him, and do your own research.  You can ask him for references too.  If you have a feeling that he is not legit, go with your hunch.

I'm not sure what sales pitch you were given but someone who list Playboy as a credit simply means they have shot something that appeared in Playboy. It does not mean you will get into Playboy if you shoot with this person.

Yes, many photographers will post "brand name" publications, but it's not that hard to get a picture published in freelance sections, etc.    I don't bother to list magazines or newspapers I've been published in because most of them no longer exist anymore!

FYI, Playboy Photoshops all the time, but in general, they are going to want photographers to deliver images that aren't Photoshopped or have minor retouching such as white balance and contrast adjustments.  The exception, of course, would be if you were a Photoshop artist and they were purchasing a cartoon or surrealistic scene.  The reality is, that nobody wants to Photoshop an image that is already shopped.  They expect you to be a good photographer and to deliver to them decent images out of the camera.

Ask yourself this. Why is someone who have credits as Vogue, Elle, l'officiel, I.D. Playboy, GQ, FHM, Stern, Nerve, Vice, Nike be contacting so many models per day on Model Mayhem that they hit their quota and have to tag models to ask them to email him?

Here's something else to consider. Why would the real Michael Dowson ask Model Mayhem members to contact him at m_dowson@hotmail.com when he clearly has his own domain and email at http://www.mikedowson.com/contact.htm ?

He invited me to test for French Playboy and others, it is a fair distance to travel if he is just a GWC

I already did a lot of the work for you. All you have to do is read and act on it.

It's two minutes on Google and some common sense. Anyone could have done that.

When are people going to realize that Playboy isn't Playboy anymore?  It was revolutionary and relevant at one point.  Now it's just a drop in the bucket, and more of an anachronism than anything.

I wouldnt trust this guy in the slightest...i have exactly the same thoughts as you...and googled his email address ending up here!

also...it makes me a bit scepitcal that he friend requests you...and doesnt send an initial message. I think its bull that everyday of the week he sends more than 5 messages...and if he as worked with all the people he says he has then im sure it would be in his interest and his budget to upgrade to VIP member.

It makes me even more sceptical that he refuses to discuss via propositions via MM...he asks you to call or email him privately...obviously so if he gets report MM can't investigate in to his messages!

also...if he was a photographer that has worked with the people he says don't you think he would have his own website...so customers, that arent members on here, can contact him.

Infact I have googled him looking for a potential website and all that comes back is a link to here.

I'm staying well away!

oh and also...this guy seems quite confused when I mentioned 'levels of work'

and replied saying he didn't know what i was talking about????

apart from the meaning of this phrase being pretty obvious (i mean no one has ever had to tell me what that phrase means) your not telling me he has never come across that phrase after all his time in the industry...

hhhhmmmmmmm...i smell a big fat rat!!!!

I've been working with Mike for nearly two years now. He has shot majority of my port and helped me to get paid work quite a lot of times. I met him through MM when I had no experience whatsoever and was very patient with me. Definitely real and very talanted.
He has indeed worked for Playboy, GQ as well as Russian Vogue and receives work offers regularily. His website is www.mikedowson.com, you can see his publications there, I am surprised some people here couldn't find it.
