Always wondered when somebody would start using gifs in their photography (not just to make an animated gif, but really shooting concepts with that in mind). Some were quite boring (with the effect not adding much), so hopefully some photographers out there want to explore this ehm field as well??..hint wink
If you do, or find other interesting examples, please post here big_smile (only ones where you think it really added something)

Do you have Photoshop Extended? That should do the job

Just google gif animator. Tons of them out there smile All they do is join multiple photos into one gif file and let you set the variable of things like speed, repeat, etc.

Was hoping to see something where the animation is not just done because you can, but because it really gives context or atmosphere to the story the image tries to tell..if that makes sense? tongue

Did you shoot more or was it just a 1 time trial?

Ah pretty, but it's the whole image that's moving and is basically a video tongue (instead of a small, but inpactful moving element within a still).
Where did you get these? Deviantart I see,did you happen to shoot/retouch these?

There are people out there developing this idea, its going to be everywhere soon!

You can use Photoshop CS5 but masking can be a pain due to movement or try After Effects as it can cancel out movement and have a mask that tracks an object. A lot more work then just a normal Gif animation.

Actually That is simply a still image that I shot. I wanted to experiment with creating a lighted effect. So it is all completely done in post. I shot the car while on a trip in Miami no headlights or turn signals were ever even turned on.

Realistic huh? smile I'm using it as a subtle eye catcher on my website and MM profile.

I do intend to do more one day and some similar to the above images but where the camera moves through the image too.

Wouldn't the movement of the camera negate the idea of a cinemagraph?

I love those, if they're well done.
I tried a quick one the other day just for the fun of it, but nothing fancy.

This indeed.
If everything is obviously moving (or even the camera) it could've been just a video.
Better yet, making it an animated gif would be like typing with one hand when you have 2.

Yep that's one.
The difficulty is to find the right effect for the right photograph.
This one didnt make me laugh, really creep me out or anything else, but I dont think it's an easy art, cinemagraphy haha
Hopefully you do more when you find time to play with this concept :]

just from looking at them this would be best done in Adobe Photoshop, or done much easier in Adobe After Effects

After Effects has the dynamic masking abilities to let you do some really creative things with multiple frames easily

but using After Effects for an animated gif is kind of like bringing a bazooka to a knife fight.

Depends on your vision of it. No where did I ever say everything would be moving. smile

And for that matter even these "gifs" don't have to be saved as "gifs" they could be saved into one of MANY video formats. But the point is for a "video" affect to be utilized within an image file.

Personally I think a good cinemagraph has only elements that move, so actually, you dont have to edit all your complete frames. Edit one (the base plate) and mask in the moving elements.

I would say burst mode should generally work (anything better than 3fps), maybe masked in video for more fluid motions like hair or water.
You could still shoot the baseplate as in image.
