Anyone have advice for MUA's to get on an assistants list? What are the steps to take, tips to know while assisting? What to expect in this type of position...

If you want to work with agency-represented MUAs
Step 1: Find (Google) agencies in your area
Step 2: Sort through the agencies figuring out which you want to work with most. Keep the list handy.
Step 3: Contact the agency. Introduce yourself, tell them why you want to work with them, give your credentials, and if you can send a link to your portfolio.
Step 4: Wait for a reply, if you do not get a reply in (max) a week, call the agency to follow up.

Be aware that many times assisting lists at the agencies are full and you will basically be put on a wait list to get on the assisting list, but at least they have your information now. Also be mindful that the agency-represented MUAs may have a team of assistants they've been working with for years and it will be unlikely they will call for you. Just keep your chin up and know that even though a phone call giving you a job with a certain artist may be improbable, it is not impossible.

If you just want to assist:
Step 1: Find (Google) local MUAs
Step 2: Contact the MUAs you like. Introduce yourself, tell them why you want to work with them, give your credentials, link to your portfolio.
Step 3: Wait for a reply, if you do not get a reply, contact the MUA again to follow up. At that point they should be able to tell you if they want an assistant or not.

I would say you can contact the MUA one more time if they had not replied to your second contact. "Three-strikes your out" is what I'm going by (if you give the MUA three opportunities to reply to you and they do not, you should probably move on from that person.)

What to expect:

You should ask whoever you contact what would be expected of you since it varies from person-to-person. It can range anywhere from cleaning brushes and getting coffee to doing full makeups.

Tip:

When you go on assisting jobs know that the main reason you are there is to learn more about the work. Do not force conversations with the talent and know that it is not the time for you to promote yourself. Do not pass out your card to the clientele because they are not yours. If a talent asks for your card, ask the person you are assisting if they are okay with you giving it out.
The last thing you need is to be seen as a nuisance or as a person trying to steal work from another artist.

I have a question. How does one become an agency mua? I have googled this but haven't seen anything on this topic.

There are agencies with artists boards. There are agencies that only represent artists. Usually they are only in the larger markets and most of the artists have lots of tearsheets or are emerging talents. Just like models, you go in and show them your book.

Good luck! Have been trying for 3 years, have even met with agents from these agencies who tell me they 'love me and my work' but still no luck...

Here is a link to a previous thread on this topic. Kathy Aragon makes an excellent post and there are also some good contributions from other seasoned artists.

I thought that's how one would go about it. But wasn't sure. Didn't want to go about it the wrong way. I wanted to make sure first. Thank you big_smile

Why do you think that is? Maybe just more of us then there is a demand to take us on?
