I have only done this one... But I have a few conceptual ideas I might work on some day...

My fav self portrait artist is definitely Brooke Shaden; she has some pretty awesome work!

I agree that sometimes it's fun to mix it up and shoot yourself. Sometimes after a great photo shoot I look at my photos and want to do the same concept myself haha.
I think it's a good idea to get in front of a camera just as often as you are behind it.

Just a handful of my selfies..

Only to test new lighting setups - like this DIY 'kinoflow' rig.

Hi Tina, I go through it. Some times I feel like I'm stealing a shot. I'm on the set on someone's dime and I sneak a shot. It's a funny feeling, like I have stolen something. In reading the other threads I realize I do it for some of the same reasons as others posting yet many of the things you say ring true like always available, how you learn so much about your self and your craft. How fun it is to follow through on "those short lived moments of conceptual inspiration". A lot of my work is documentary, I have been doing documentaries many years among other assignments and I can share that it's hard to sell your work if you are not doing it too ,e.g., documenting yourself, your family, your work. And also as you mentioned you learn so much, like how hard it is to be comfortable before the camera lens. Thank you for your thought provoking insights.

I used to do lots of self portraits before kids.  Now I do sometimes but it's mostly headshots.  Not a fan of the body changes and I'm finally starting to show my age =/  but I am *very* vain and am trying very hard to get a good looking lingerie shot.

I have been wanting to do one and even gave it a half-assed try once but it turned out bad.  It is a lot of work and can be frustrating.  There are very few photos of me that exist so I might give this a try again soon.  It would certainly be a fun challenging project when I have time to work on it.

I've done the self-portrait thing from tome to time, though I prefer to be on the other side of the camera.  If I have a concept I want to try, but no suitable subject I'll move to the other side.

My avatar is me ! I always felt that it was a little strange that an avatar was of a beautiful woman, and the photographer was some guy that I was talking to in the forum. As if I was talking to the one pictured in the avatar. So, I just made my avatar a self-portrait. Just a personal quirk, but I "fixed" it.

I thought I was the only one to think it strange for a male photographer to use a photo of a female as an avatar.  This self-portrait thread brought out a few others showing themselves in their avatar.

I suck at being the subject of a photo, but at least people have a face to associate with our conversation.

I am neither photogenic nor pretty, and I enjoy my Jager. And thus a masterpiece was born out of drunken ideas.

I allow myself to be in a shot once in a while

Or else I take silly naked webcam portraits of myself because otherwise it's just an uncomfortable ordeal

I think a lot of photographers might take time to self-test new ideas or concepts before using them with a model, especially if they're paying for it. Unless it's something that's just so difficult you can't do it yourself.

I often play around with new lighting ideas, some of them turn out okay.

But like many others, I tend to hide myself in many shots. These are a couple that worked out..
