That creates a flat floating card in space, but it is stereo, yes.

Actually I see you do some warping at the very end. That will make the card not flat after all, but not necessarily shaped like a person in 3D, either. Depends on how carefully you plan and execute your warping.

The grayscale depth map -> horizontal displacement map method is a common one in the stereo conversion industry. The trick for movies is coming up with good depth maps and doing it in motion, but the concepts apply.

You can do stills that way in Photoshop and motion in After Effects - among other programs.

The OP's method also displaces one eye to make the other, and is a great intro to the topic, but the depth map method is more precise.
