I'm just wondering why some photographers say no escorts; unless its a female escort.

a female cant steal from you?
a female cant hurt you?
a female cant distract from the shoot?

if i was a photographer, i would either allow escorts; or not at all. not discriminate what escorts are ok and which aren't by gender, race, etc.

Two reasons:

A female is less threatening.

Also, even better, about 30% of the time I convert the escort into a llama and do a follow on shoot with her.

Macho guys don't think a girl can beat them up.

I agree with the OP for the most part.  The biggest reason I think we feel "extra" pressure from a guy, is that there is a greater percentage of the time where he is a boyfriend and there will be jealousy and other distracting pressure from him, vs  a friend who happens to be female.

I allow a female as a second model, if I approve her looks and she's comfortable with what I shoot.  Other than that, it's no escorts.  A female is moderately less likely to be a physical threat, but that's not a big concern anyway.  They are still potentially going to get bored, be a distraction, have other plans, etc.

That is kinda funky if you ask me

I just say *no escort or any other extraneous personnel on my set*  - period.

Your escort can drive you to my studio, can meet me and look around,  then he / she / it / they - whatever - need to find somewhere else to hang around til the shoot is over....

My MUA Hair stylist and wardrobe stylist / designer and any of my photographic assistants should not have to dance around your escort and neither should I....

but then again, if you are asking to bring an escort you would probably not wind up at my studio in the first instance...

Another female is usually encouraging and a help with wardrobe and posing.

A male is either a big plus or a big minus.  and some models taste in boyfriends is often horrible.

I have had male friends of models be ex-cons and drug dealers.

That's all and good and no one should dictate how you conduct your business... while at the same rate, you shouldn't really care how others conduct theirs either.

That said, a few reasons why photographers might prefer a female escort to a male escort might be:

1) Less chance of the female escort being the model's bf.
2) In general, females are less intimidating to other people who might be on set/location.
3) I could probably outrun a female as opposed a male escort! (lol...just a joke)

Because females can't be ex-cons or drug dealers lol

My opinion is you either allow escorts or you don't.It  That whole only females comes across as sexist and macho to me. But to each their own.

if the main concern is the male escort being the models boyfriend....isnt it easier just to say "no significant others"?

and what if the male escort she wants to bring is gay....

and what if the female escort you approve of is her lesbian lover?

I hate this justification. Your attention should be focused on the model you booked. Not distracted by how to get her friend too.

I generally don't work with escorts, but when I do (almost always low-priority shoots I can afford to lose), I don't discriminate. I just tell the model no BF or Daddy. Sometimes I don't even specify that. I just ask that the escort sit in an adjacent room.

One of the worst escorts I ever dealt with was the sister of a girl paying for a high school senior portrait shoot. The sister, jealous of the attention, would wait until I was ready to shoot and then do her best to break her sister up in laughter or just distract her. Every time. I put up with that as best I could -- the girl had paid for the shoot -- but I finally had enough and asked her very firmly to stop it. The sister terminated the shoot. She just told the younger sister she was done.

I also lost a reflector at that shoot.

I've had the same luck with 3somes either way, so it really dosent matter what gender the escort is.

I don't disallow male escorts. I now strongly discourage a boyfriend or a "manager" as an escort - to the point of canceling shoots. I've never had a problem with a husband as an escort, and some of them have been quite helpful.

As far as I can tell, the function or a manager, once the model and I have selected wardrobe, is to tell the model that she looks awful in it. (For the past several months, in most cases wardrobe has been selected by the model and me in advance of the shoot.)

Of course a boyfriend can perform that function as well - but I've never had a manager (or a husband or a female escort) scream at the model during a shoot. I've had three boyfriends do that in the past year.

The first time the model ran to the dressing room in tears. The second time the model walked out the door in tears, got in her car and left (and left her boyfriend stranded at the studio). The third time, a few weeks ago, the boyfriend and the model yelled at each other for 20 minutes until she sent him packing, and then the shoot continued.

Of course all three models assured me that their boyfriends were nice guys who were only there for the models' protection...

Oh, btw, I know photographers who have had boyfriends pull knives on them.

Sorry for the "stereotyping."

It's kind of stupid when I hear people say I don't allow male escorts for my protection but allow female escorts if you want to be protected you should just not allow any type of escort regardless of gender. A female can as easily pull out a gun on you. The stereotype that females are somewhat less dangerous it's ridiculous in this thread.

Oh, I'm sure females can be just as jealous and volatile as males - even more so in some cases. To my knowledge only one model brought a female llama herder who was her SO - and the SO stood around and talked to me for half an hour after the shoot. Go figure.

Enjoyed your latest tutorial on extractions.

The two times I've done shoots where I allowed escorts they were both females, and those shoots are what led me to stop saying yes to it. So I'm with you here.

Because they simply don't want any other males in their territory. They want the model all to themselves and feel threatened, or at least self-conscious, with another male prowling their turf and eyeing their behavior and THEIR model.

Having an extra female, whatever she calls herself, is just a bonus to them. The more the merrier.

I've used both. Male & female, but not because I felt the need for one, I just knew I would need their help.
And that's what they were. A huge help, rather than a problem

Call it stereotyping if you want to, but this is from my own experience:

The two times I allowed male escorts anywhere near the premises, the models were noticeably inhibited, in two ways-- concerned about what the escort would think about the artwork we were creating, and concerned about the time we were taking.  The males were out in the hall or down the street calling, texting "how much longer," "when are you gonna be done," etc.

Never had that happen with female escorts. Not only were they encouraging and helpful, on three of four occasions that the model brought a female with her, her escort agreed to pose as well.  Two of the escorts had never posed nude before.

Male escorts?   No thanks.

Female escorts?  Bring 'em on!

I've never understood the argument no escorts unless it's a female either. The entire reason most photographers don't like escorts is because they potentially distract the model, wander around taking your focus away from the shoot or could steal something. A woman escort fits all three of those in my book.

Hmmmm I guess are not real pros  at my shoots I have my team there plus clients and makeup so an escort is irelevant even on the nude shoots I do....hmmm what are you all afraid of....Does this mean you want to be alone with the model, what purpose does this give you, is making the model unconfortable you way, what if it is a male model , are no escorts allowed as well.

Please explain your rational for no escorts, please rememebr I have been shooting professionally for 30 yrs and have severl nude books and major nude exhibits undermy belt......

Thanks

No, it's not. Either sex can pull a gun, but usually only the male poses the potential of an unarmed physical threat.

Cut the white-knighting.

Not afraid. Annoyed at the disruptions some llama herders have created. Annoyed at the loss of equipment when the only unoccupied hands at the shoot were those of the llama herder. Annoyed at having to brace for not only the model cancelling for her own reasons, but also cancelling if the llama herder bails.

I don't need to be alone with the model. I'm fine with having other people there as long as those people are part of the shoot and behave accordingly. Other models awaiting their turn in a multi-model shoot have never gotten out of line in my shoots. Hair and MUAs, if they pipe up at all, do so for the benefit of the shoot. llama herders have occasionally been helpful, but more often than not they've run roughshod over the shoot. And when I told them to cool it they get miffed and throw an even bigger wrench into the shoot.

what if it is a male model , are no llama herders allowed as well.

Yes. A male model can be just as distracted by an intrusive llama herder as a female model can.

Please explain your rational for no llama herders, please rememebr I have been shooting professionally for 30 yrs and have severl nude books and major nude exhibits undermy belt......

There are plenty of llama herder threads for you to browse. Do your own damned homework.
