I never start a job without a signed contract and a retainer.  (I am a licensed professional in a field unrelated to this site)  My contract clearly says, that if I start a job, and there is a cancellation, I keep what I have invested.  Twenty years ago when I went into business and was scrapping for every job, I made the mistake of going on peoples word.

It told me not to trust people.  My work was and is always top quality and a good value.  I always treated my clients with respect.
