Once upon a time this was possible, now I find that it is impossible.  Any suggestions outside of here or craigslist on how to find models to shoot this?

It's purely a matter of finding models who value your work as a form of compensation.

Become established in your local photographic community.
Become an assets to your local photographic community.
Produce good quality images.
Post great images on the Internet, preferably in a popular website.
Ask your friends in the local photographic community to send models to you.

But in general, modeling rates are dependent on the local supply & demand of models.  If there are more photographers looking for TF* nude models than there are nude models, the models will ask for compensation.  It's a law of the jungle marketing.

Go to a local college and build a repoir, 98% of my work is nude and it has all been TFP/TFCD or just free.

Mostly ModelMayhem, occasionally FB.  That's about 99% of them for me.

There are models who pose nude for fun (and images); and for curiosity ( no garuntee you'll get their blessing to use the images); and for trade (half nude and half another theme they need).

Just a fair bit of work networking to make it happen.

There are also models who pose nude for trade, because that's the "theme they need."  Some will, if you ask nicely, put on clothing.  Others, not so much.

The models are everywhere. The key to working with them lies in offering something they want.

Have you found that the way in which you approach models has changed between when it was easy, and now? Are you perhaps letting your experience change the way in which you word your requests? Maybe trying to be more professional, but perhaps coming across as more arrogant or demanding?

Maybe go back and look at the types of communications you made with models back when it was easy, and compare them to the kind of messages you are sending out now. If there is no difference in the communications... is there maybe a difference in the kinds of models you are approaching? the places?

Maybe the images you have in your portfolio are giving a different message than what you had back in the easy days? Profile text, etc...?

Join local FB groups and network.
Post photos and tag models you shoot in them (if they are ok with that!).  Their friends then see, etc etc.

They find me. I am shooting on the road next week and put out a casting call, I got way more offers than I have time to shoot. And I will be there a full week. I would never have time if ever used FB or CL.

You're in the middle of LA! Or so near as to make no difference!  You should be able to find plenty.

if it were me, I'd just browse the models within a 50 mile radius for those with the kinds of nudes you like and send them a nicely worded PM.  Don't limit yourself to those who say "Shoots Nudes? Yes". Find the ones who indicate an interest in genres that may often be shot with some level of nudity such as body paint, pinup, fetish or erotic.  And offer to shoot in those genres.  Many times models list no nudes to keep out the creeps, but are quite willing to shoot nudes with someone who shares their artistic sensibilities.

And if you go this route, make sure that you carry through and shoot the things they want as well.  Communication is the key.  Don't hide the fact that one of the things you want to shoot is nudes, but not the only thing.  Make it clear that you are interested in other genres as well.  Don't bait and switch.  You'll just come across as another creep if you do, but if you're as good as your word, you'll not only expand your contacts with good nude models, you'll expand your range as a model photographer at the same time.

It's the approach I use and all the nudes in my portfolios shot TF and usually on our first shoot.

First have a portfolio full of what the Models calls "Fine Art Nudes". that are as good as or better than what the model already have in theirs (only their opinion counts here if you are looking for a trade shoot). That just leaves the negotiations on the particulars of the shoot. I get most of my models here on MM. Some followed over from the old omp account and a few new ones I connected with on Facebook. Models will also tell other models to shoot with me. I'd say that's a big part of my model pool each year. Then I travel and put up Travel, Casting and affability notices. I do this twice a year and shoot 8-10 models from this.

Here.  Post a casting or msg them directly, there are so many models here it's not hard to find one that has the look you are after.

is the problem that you can't find models you like, or that the models you like don't want to work with you in exchange for what you're offering?

I have found all my models on here, and have connected with several via facebook but have yet to schedule a shoot with them. If you have a unique idea and a portfolio to support it, I don't see why models would be hard to come by.

I also offer a physical print as compensation, signed, numbered, ready to frame. It’s a little more tangible than a few web sized files. Feels more like a piece of art I guess, at least that’s how I would see it if I were a model.

Some models are willing to trade a nude shoot for some non-nude portfolio images of their ideas. Many MM models post a list of images they really want to emulate. Be able to offer them what they want in exchange for what you want.

Start with friends and acquaintances. The worst that can happen is they say no. Friends are also much more likely to do you a favor than a stranger.

An original creative ideas can persuade someone to do TFP more effectively than anything else. Write out a detailed creative proposal that illustrates you want more than a naked body. If a model thinks you are doing something imaginative and original that will but a nice feather in their portfolio they are more likely to do TFP. Ask yourself what images in your portfolio would make perspective models WANT to shoot with you. Then make sure you have those interesting images in your port.

Cast a wider net for types. Very experienced models with a face, body and portfolio straight out of Vogue or Playboy are less likely to do TFP, clothed or nude, because they can easily book a paid shoot instead. Most experienced models know that there are a lot more photographers who want nude female models than there are female models who need more nude photos for their portfolio. If you expand your net to a broader age, physical and racial types, you will have better luck finding nude TFP.

Tactfully approach non-models in situations where you are more likely to find open-minded people. Non-models are sometimes more likely to do a one-off nude shoot as a thrill without demanding a fee than someone who is trying to make a living as a model. Hangout near a college campus or artsy area for example. Have a business card with a link to an online portfolio that has both clothed and nudes. Tell them you don't want to take their time but that you are a photographer, they have an interesting look and you would love to discuss a shoot. Hand them the card and invite them to check out your work. Again, if you have interesting images, even if they are all clothed images, you will get better responses. Thank them and walk away.

Those that use Craigslist to look for models or general people of interest to photograph, where on that site are you posting ads at? I was thinking of posting an ad looking for women to shoot some exhibitionist type shots but not sure where on CL I should post the ad to get the most views. Would the casual encounters section within the personals section work?

At the very top of the Facebook screen in the blue section is a search window. Just type in whatever your looking for. We were talking about this earlier on FB but there are a lot of fan pages on there that is borderline porn! I was surprised to see photos that push the limit so to speak.

It's easier to get total amateurs than experienced models for nudes. You might be surprised what you can find in your circle of friends.

On the minus side, total amateurs can be uncomfortable or awkward in front of a camera. Even if they're exhibitionistic and totally excited about getting nudes done, even if they're beautiful, they might not be good MODELS.

I have no trouble searching and finding "modeling" or "photography" groups on facebook.  The results give literally thousands of groups.  The problem is that they are all over the world, usually with no indication where they are until you go to the group and check it out.  There seems to be no way to add additional filters to narrow it down by the location or other relevant factors.  It is worse than useless.

To make matters worse, group membership doesn't even seem to be listed in people's profiles.  As a networking site to actually find new people locally with common interests, it seems a bit brain dead.
