Too bad, Mr. President, because if you weren't dead, maybe you could be in Washington, D.C. kicking some Republican neo-con butt and show those slackers how a GOOD conservative can get the job done.

Indeed.

And how in the actual fuck did Spiro Agnew worm his way into this thread.

When Eisenhower was president everyone paid their fair share in taxes! As a result we built the interstate highway system, funded NASA, had the strongest military in the world, had the best schools and colleges, funded cancer research, conquered polio and smallpox, invented more great stuff than people could use.

This is an excellent book. It will tell you how a real conservative gets the job done.

Gets the job done? roll

Hear about the new Eisenhower doll? Wind it up and it does nothing for 8 years.

He liked the autobahn so he started the interstate system. A good thing of sorts, be he wasn't very far-sighted about it's possible inherent problems in the future......which we are paying up the wazoo for now.

Likeable guy.....moderate......good job in WW2, but a mediocre president at best.

Wrong!  The interstate system was on the drawing boards long before he became president.

Yes and while you are at it you could set the record streight how LBJ gutted the Civil Rights Act of 1957 only to take cred for passing the same act in 64 with the parts he cut out!

Much better than doing the wrong thing for 8.

BTW he kept us out of war.

Got us out of Korean War (Police Action)

Balanced the budget THREE times

Sponsored and signed the National Highway Act of 1956

Sponsored and signed the Civil Rights Act of 1957 (after LBJ deleted the enforcement provisions necessitating the CRA of 1964)

In 1953 he created the Department of Health, Education and Welfare ( not sure if that is a plus or minus but it is something)

Expanded SS rolls by over 7 million people by including farmers and professional.

Anyone who thinks he did nothing but play golf displays their ignorance of history.

Some would argue that the history of segregation was and is in the Dem party and the home of integration and Civil Rights was and is the Republican Party, so evolving is not the issue, getting the history right is. That is a little off topic and subject for another thread on another day.

Of course, I acknowledge the role reversal of the parties on civil rights. Any educated person must (actually, it's a bit more complicated than that).  But we should not vote based on a party's past platform, but on what it stands for now.  And attacking the Dems today by bringing up the Dixiecrats gets the Republicans nothing.  The GOP's only hope is to have a popular platform, as was shown in November.  They still haven't learned that lesson. Think they ever will?  Or will they go down in history as a once-relevant party, like the Bull Moose Party or the Whigs?

Yeah right....that's why it's named the Calvin Coolidge interstate sys.......oh, wait.

Airplanes were on the drawing board in the mid 19th c too. We should really erase the Wright Bros off the books.

I would think that it would be ok to talk about dead presidents.  Not much good to discuss about the live ones. smile

He was of my fathers Republican party, and I consider him to be perhaps the best Republican President of that century.  The worst?  George W Bush.  Heck, even George H W Bush, Sr. made better decisions than his own son.  But isn't this getting into Soap Box material??

...yes - he died on March 28, 1969...I am well aware of that fact because I was in basic training in the US Army at the time, and my basic training company did NOT get the day off for his funeral, like just about everyone else in the US at the time (including the basic training company in the next barracks over from us - our company commander was a total hard-ass...).
