As do I... Thats not what the OP is about though. I was shooting something that necessitated a long lens (very appropriate for a 100mm on a crop for a shot like this) and the flare is better with wider apertures. These 2 facors means that my 100 f/2 is the right lens for the job (as opposed to, say, my 70-200 f/4)

And I was happy because the shoot gave me an opportunity to shoot with my current favorite.

Sony 16-50/f2.8 on the cropped a77. wink And the Sony 70-300 "G" to go with it.

Not sure what else I really need...oh, yeah...my Tamaron 60mm/f2.0 (Macro).

My permanent favourite lens is the Nikon 24-70f2.8

but my flavour of the moment is the Nikon 70-200f4 -  it is making my beauty work look much better than the 85f1.4 or the 105f2.8

Even though I always have 'better glass' in my bag and I'm suppose to like the Nikon stuff much better, I'm finding that I always go back to my trusty Tamron 28-75 2.8 on every shoot.  For the live music events that I shoot, I couldn't imagine shooting with anything else.

For certain portraits, I'm finding that side by side, it actually outperforms my Nikon 17-55 2.8 as well, and that lens is killer.  It seems to my eyes, though, that the images from the Tammy give me more options in post.

No laughter here.  Over the last few years, when I absolutely HAVE to get the shot and know I only have one chance, this lens is at the business end of my D7000...and D90 before that.

My 85 1.2 is on my 5D II 80% of the time. When it's not, it's my 35 1.4.

My plan is to pick up the 5D III when the price drops a little more. Strap the 85 on that and put the 35 on the MK II.

My current fav is the Canon 24-105 ƒ/4L ... yet my all time fav that I still shoot with would have to be the Canon 50mm ƒ/1.0

I traded it in for a tamron 17-50 2.8 (went with a crop camera, so effectually the same)

My main body right now is crop (D7000) for various reasons.  Believe it or not, I've been considering selling my Nikon 17-55 2.8 and looking into the Tamron instead.  Among other reasons, I travel extensively both to get to shoots and during the shoots, lugging around the Nikon glass is like carrying a bowling ball around.  Is the Tamron 17 - 50 as good as the 28 - 75?  Not sure that I can rent one to try out or not so I'm looking for some good hands on advice.

I went from the older 28-75 to the newer 17-50 VC - color, contrast, sharpness are quite similar.

Great info, thanks.  I've never really been a big fan of VC at the short focal lengths, but I'm sure I can just turn it off without a problem.  At heart, I'm a bit of a purist I guess and try to always maintain the 1/focal length shutter speed rule from way back when.

I'll give it a try!

For model shots it would be the 138mm Zeiss 1.8 followed by the 70-200 f2.8

The Zeiss 24-70 f2.8 is dear to my heart but not the one I use that much for portraits

I just got the Canon 100mm F2.0 myself recently and I have to admit I like the sharpeness and contrast of this lens. You do need a lot of room to use it for full body shots and it hunts a bit in low light on my 5D Mark II, but so far I have been impressed.

16-35 Nikkor F/4 is my current fav lens on my Nikon D800. First lens I bought. It tested a bit sharper than the 24-70. I didn't care about the stop of light difference and it was also cheaper by a bit. And when i checked the meta data of my favorite images shot on my D300/300s most were shot with my 12-24. IF 18-36mm FF EQ. So I let that be my guide. I want the 70-200 F/4 Nikkor that also seems to be getting some good press in this thread. Right now I'm making do with a new Nikkor 85mm F/1.8 for my longest lens. http://assets.modelmayhem.com/images/smilies/scary.pngI know. LOL!

Ive recently gone full frame and I really miss my old 17-55 F2.8 IS, they are amazing lenses. I shot a personal project on Istanbul at night with mine on my old 40D and the images were so sharp, I was handheld at 1/15.

Ive just bought a 28-70 L, but too early to tell how thats going to pan out. I may move towards fast primes in the future.
