So I signed my business up a few days ago to Thumbtack.com. It is a site where people can get quotes on a service they are looking for. They send me a text/email every time someone in my area has requested a quote for makeup and give me details like party size and date. The only catch is that you have to pay around $1.60 each time you want to contact someone to give them a quote. I've already had them send me several people to give quotes to in the past 3 days.
Do you think paying to send out quotes is something worth doing? Has thumbtack.com worked for anyone on here?
I don't know if the people who are booking services are just looking for the cheapest price or for actual quality.

Waste of money. The more quotes you submit, the higher the cost to submit becomes (they want you to join). It is also impossible to just send a quote to someone as a makeup artist. There are way too many factors in makeup artistry to just send a direct quote to someone. You need a way to discuss the plans with them and show them your work. On a site like this, they will just go with the cheapest artist they get, and let's hope that's not the kind of artist you are.
After a few weeks of giving quotes, if you don't sign up for their website, you'll just stop hearing from them.

I am definitely not the cheapest in the area and I'm sure not the cheapest on the site. That was my biggest concern with a place that just sends quotes out that people would just be looking for a cheap price over actual quality.

I've been on thumbtack for almost a year now - and honestly, I only got booked once. I am not the cheapest artist out there, and these requests, it looks like they want the cheapest. My rates are competitive, they're not super high - but they're definitely not dirt low either. I was on their subscription plan for 11.99 a month, which was fine, but now they no longer do subscriptions - it's about $3 per lead. It adds up - especially if you don't get any bookings. My advice is to try it a few times, especially if you live in an area where makeup artists are scarce, but don't waste your money long-term..

Thanks for the advice. Most of the leads they have given me were crappy. For instance one was for a person who wanted to have a makeup artist come over so that she could see how a professional would do her makeup. lol

I've been on Thumbtack since September of last year. I booked two jobs from it last year and was about to give up on it. I dis-enrolled from the monthly membership and said screw it. I decided to give it one more shot this year and I've booked three jobs thus far. I definitely have sent more quotes than I've booked jobs but I'm going to continue to see how it goes. Hope this helps.

It's worth it if I even get 1 client for every 15 quotes I send out. So I guess that's the good thing about thumb tack. I also like that they give you the location of the wedding and date before you have to send out the quote.

I wanted to update everyone with my results from thumbtack.com so far I have given quotes on several weddings and none have hired me.
Something that I have noticed. Out of the numerous leads I have been given almost all have an event date super close to when they are asking for a quote. So to me it seems like a lot of the people using the site are looking for a last minute makeup artist.
I'll let you know if I ever get booked on thumbtack.com but so far it's a huge waste of money.

Sorry to hear no success yet. I have not booked anything new since either and I only submit quotes for weddings. Many of the quotes I've given have been "over budget" so I'm not sure if the people using thumbtack are expecting the rates to be dirt cheap. As I mentioned, I'm continuing to hold on a little longer only because I did get lucky and book 3 weddings. Hope you book one soon!

I'm on thumbtack in the busy LA market and I do get jobs from it (airbrush makeup and blow outs for parties). The only thing is, clients see me on thumbtack and then google to find my website and contact me privately. Don't know how much good that does for thumbtack lol.
Also, do you guys ever feel weird going to random strangers' houses? Sometimes I'm a little sketched by thumbtack and rather just take referrals from my other clients so I know a little more about the people booking me.

It seems to me that if the site is primarily searched and/or posted on a quoting rates basis that you will only run into customers who are using rate based thinking instead of quality or service based thinking.
This to me seems like an express train to MediocreIHateMyJobVille.

I can only speak from my experience.
I use the site for weddings only. My rates are competitive to my region; Atlanta, GA and by no means would I consider my work/business mediocre. I respond only to people who looking for a wedding day artist. So I don't waste my money/credits on clients I do not want/need. Obviously I make more money from a group wedding than someone wanting makeup for a night out on the town. Since I am targeting bridal clients, there is no need for me to go to a stranger's home. When I conduct my trial sessions they are held at my salon so the potential client as well as myself are comfortable and safe. I go on site for makeup application the day of the wedding. Since responding to this thread the last time, I have booked two more weddings and yes I have met the clients in person, conducted their trials and received their deposits. I use Thumbtack like any other advertising/marketing tool. It did not start out this way but now it's working for me; idk not every region will be the same.

Well I never thought I'd pay for a lead with thumbtack, but I gave in and
and put out $17.00. I'm happy to report that I just booked a small wedding and a prom makeup at my usual rate !!
Color me surprised !!
