....because the absolute HEROES of the internet based art modeling community are apparently no longer "real models."

It's been a long time since an MM forum post made me mad.

I guess that, once you retire, the fact you did so incredibly much work... It just totally ceases to matter.

Them gals were who we all looked up to five years ago, who I aspired to be like... Reading that was like slapping the whole art modeling community through the face.

Many people have a tendency to ignore the things that they aren't a part of and act like it doesn't exist just because they aren't involved in it

I has a rageface.

I was never a super serious, doing it as a job type model, I was a very casual hobbyist, but I WAY looked up to and admired people like you and Mouse and Model Sarah and Jessalyn and Wara and Death of Field (back when she did that) that did it (and still do it).

How freaking rude.

...yeh, that's a good point...

It just seems like, if you're into internet networking for photography at all, certain things would just be familiar to you, because you're surrounded by them online.

there's also the fact that I forget how irrelevant I have become in the year and a half since I was actively shooting. That includes my opinions and experiences. Maybe things HAVE changed that much, that fast. Who fucking knows.

You're only surrounded by them if you see them.  Many people cannot see anything that doesn't sit at the edge of their nose

I don't shoot anymore.  I started becoming irrelevant before I decided to quit

I just didn't want to be one of those burnt out models, still trying to shoot when I had become mean, frustrated and uninspired. I heard some horror stories about that. It was just time to do something else. I actually love shooting again, now that I took some time away.

I couldn't imagine doing it for an entire year. I'd pull all my fucking hair out.

I'm burnt out after 10 days.
I hate it - but I'm starting to get to the point where modeling isn't fun anymore. I enjoy the shoots where I trade with people who I really want to work with, but my paid work is starting to feel like, "Uh. Another one. I don't want to go. But I have to. I need to pay bills. Blah"

I'm tempted to put it in the fb group and see what comes of pointing them all that direction.

Making comments like that, he should get ripped. He's got a big enough post count to know better. And nobody in this industry can afford to alienate people like that, and they shouldn't get away with it.

I was pretty confrontational in my last post. I don't care if I start an argument. I've been on here for years and never been brigged.

I would chew him out then if I was you. I could try - but I don't have nearly as much experience as you do when it comes to the traveling model thing - so I might look silly haha.

I was in the wave of models who came after Raelyn, Tia and Iona. I feel like they were so awesome and epic that it was impossible to compare. My work never, ever compared to theirs. Not even close. My experiences were similar to theirs. They were just a hell of a lot better than me, and I was lucky enough to live near enough urban centers that I was also able to capitalize on my local market in addition to out of region trips.

I have nothing but admiration for those women.

I agree with you....  I don't think anyone can say anything to give him greater enlightenment or greater understanding.

In cases like this, part of me feels that it is  better that these narrow-minded people reveal themselves for exactly what and who they are.

Self-outing can be a good thing.

I really want to rage out on the people telling a guy he shouldnt spend -yet is prepared to spend-   what a model   - that he wants to work with-   is quoting him because....

-"I would never pay that"
-"I dont ever pay models anything"
-"you can get a different model for cheaper...try offering 20 bucks"

HE is okay spending that much on the model he wants to hire.

Stop fucking undercutting model rates as if its YOUR money the other guy is spending.

I don't always follow my own advice but....

You can spent time and effort in being angry and trying to change someones opinion who does NOT want his opinion changed...OR you can spend that time creating more art, modeling, moving forward in your craft....

I have found that the long breaks I have taken from MM are JUST as important as the time I spend here....

I do more work when I'm not having to defend my job/life/friends/life to people who are just angry at my success.

That's a really positive way to look at it. I guess I find myself kind of nostalgic about a time when I was real life friends with a bunch of people from MM, and we were like on big, creepy family of people doing what made us happy, hacking out a living at it (or not), but feeling like I knew -really knew- a good number of the people. I forget that all that has changed, and it's not the same place it used to be.

the new people don't seem to be as connected or close-knit as many of us were five years ago

Ya, it is smart to undercut models who aren't really models... Posing for long hours in the hot sun, working day and night, put into all sorts of odd position and clothing (sometimes). You really shouldn't even feed them.

Now that I have mostly retired from modeling I get undercut on my studio rates by photographers....

I came up with a great counter to the ever common

"I have a friend who used to let me use his photo-studio for free"

I ask them  "why they can't go to them now?"

"well, he had rent issues and is now out of business...."

I let them know that YES they WILL pay me a fair rate for the local market that not only pays rent but gives me a living wage. So my studio will be here for them to rent next year and the year after that.

I'm surprised this shit bothers you, just because it seems to be pretty common.

The one i like is when people assume that anyone who isn't a mainstream model is a failed mainstream model doing the best with what she can get, because you know its not like any of us started modelling so we could get paid to be tied up and have our picture taken big_smile
