Would a photographer page have their avatar a high quality picture of themself? or a picture they've taken?
Or does it not really matter and am I overthinking it.
right now its a picture of me..

I think it should be whatever you consider to be most interesting, or your strongest piece. An avatar should draw people in to look at your profile. Usually they're not self shots.

The Avatar should be your "hook" or calling card that gets peoples' attention. Something weird, artistic, sexy, or exceptional will get you the hits you want. smile

I agree with everyone else.  After all, you don't see many shopkeepers standing in their own shop windows!

With all due respect, nobody really wants to see a photo of the photographer - unless SHE happens to be super hot!

Your avatar is supposed to excite people about your work. For a male photographer who shoots mostly females, a self-portrait is about as useful for that as a photo of a pile of bricks.

Also, some models may feel that by putting a self-portrait as an avatar, a photographer is giving away the fact that he's really more interested in meeting pretty girls than in producing quality work.

I would never use a photo of myself as an avatar!

Can we make an exception for me? I've been told I'm 'super hot' by every girl I've ever gotten a lap dance from...

Welcome to MM; and I would agree with the others who say that the pretty blonde is your best bet for an avatar (right now, anyways...)

The ONLY photos that can be displayed in a photographers portfolio are photos that the photographer actually shot, so IF you choose to use a photograph of yourself, be sure it's a self portrait.

This issue has come up at least once in the past.  A photographer had a pretty lousy portfolio, but it was good enough to be accepted.  He was also a model and posted a quality photo of himself that someone else had shot.  It's considered deceptive because the average person would think he's the photographer.

Not sure why, but I thought it was cool to post a self-portrait.

As a model, when I'm going to be traveling to a city I use the browse function and type in the city and go through the profiles. Because there are at least hundreds, if not thousands of profiles, I only click on the avatars where the model looks good or whathaveyou. I never click on profiles of what look like self-portraits of the photographer. I would have completely missed yours. We want to see your very best image as the avatar to bring us into your port, not a photo of you. If you want to include your face in your bio or at the bottom of your port, that would help ease a model's concerns because then she'll know what you look like before the shoot.
