...and even myself.  lol

Last year, I replied to a thread about rates stating that a freelance Russian model in NYC wanted $300 per hour for fashion nudes.  At the time I thought that was exorbitant, and that no one on MM could top it.  This week, somebody proved me wrong.

I've been speaking with a freelance model about doing a few hours of fashion nude.  She hasn't been that active on MM lately but it seems she's been doing a few small shoots with a few NYC photographers now and then.   She advertises her availability to do nudes on her MM profile and has done many before.

We were setting up a shoot yesterday over facebook messaging.  Everything was going great. She tells me her rate is $75/ hour, which I assume is for "everything".   I sent her my fashion nude moodboard, which is pretty standard with images of famous models doing fashion nude poses.  She replies back, "NUDES ARE $500 per hour".

I almost fell backwards out of my chair, lol.  When I recomposed myself, I said "thank you, but I think your rates are out of my league.  Sorry to have bothered you".

I'm pretty sure I've topped all of you.  Has anybody received rates quoted higher than that?

Doesn't seem like much if the shoot lasts one or two hours and the images are on the internet.

What is 'a lot of money' to me is if I can pay off my Student Loans from one job.
That is my 'whoa' factor.

Yes, you win the race to prove how much a model DOESN'T want to work with you. I think that comes with a blue ribbon.

Well two things we know so far:
1.  I won't be working with JulesNYC anytime soon.
2.  Some photographers score low in reading comprehension.

+1

I know some people in the industry (models and photographers) who will jack up their rates if certain people ask to work with them, for different reasons. I also know some MUAs who will raise their rates because they know a model has really bad skin and it takes a lot longer and lot more product and skill to give her a near flawless look.

Newbie So Cal OC / LA area model quoted $300 per hour for Pin-Up, Swimwear! Wanted a MUA, and Hair Stylist! Plus a DVD of all images, and would only sign a non-commercial release! Need-less to say she wasn't booked for the photo session.

For the peanut gallery that is suggesting she didn't want to work with me...not true.

This particular model willingly agreed to do a "two model shoot", two weeks from now, with me and a mutual "model friend".  The rate for that "two model shoot" was not discussed yet but the concept was agreed upon and the date was set.  They both live next to each other in NYC and were coming together on the train.

This was a sidebar conversation for just her and I to do something together- like in her MM portfolio.

You pretty much nailed it. Many models will quote a high rate when they do not want the job for whatever their reason is.

Depends on the model really.  I wouldn't expect a popular model who is signed to work for $50hr if she is usually making $3k per shoot.  Too many people on MM think $100hr is the max when it isn't. Look around and see what you get for that rate here on MM.  You will be disappointed in some cases if not many. lol

I never hold it against a model for their prices.  I've worked assisting for low wages and when I get the big job I make the big wages and my employees make the low wages.  I've many times worked for cheaper than the model's are making.  That doesn't really bother me.

I charge $25,000 to shoot weddings. Not because I feel my images are worth that much, but more because I don't really wanna shoot weddings. But I will for that price.

Yeah, I don't get it.  Why is this a big deal?  Why is this thread-worthy?  Indeed, given that similar threads pop up weekly, what's the point of all this?

Seems to me that negotiating prices is Business 101.  This is a basic business skill.  Perhaps she's not enthusiastic about the OP's project and has decided to price herself out of contention.  Perhaps she's negotiating by making a high first offer.

But who cares?  If you don't like her price, go ahead & walk away (as the OP apparently did).  Why do we need a thread on the topic?  It's not funny.  It's not amusing.  It's not educational.  It just is what it is.

I'm not making it a big deal, you are.  And I did walk away (....there's goes that low reading comprehension again).

If we can have threads about escorts, "most embarrassing photoshoot mistakes" and "what to do if she's shows up fatter than in her profile"...then my topic is just as valid.   Who pissed in your cornflakes pal?  lol

I've never been quoted a rate that high, but I've seen similar threads about rates higher than that.

Personally, I quote 50K for weddings.

I could afford about 2 minutes at that rate.

Anybody can say anything at all.  There was a model in my area, a beginner with bad pictures who put on her profile that she (1)  charges $1000/hr and (2) was booked months in advance.  I assume it was some inside joke.  I didn't get too exercised about it.

Wow!   You assumed.   Then her rates jump from $75 an hour to $500     Then everything was not going great!    I wonder what you said or did to cause that to happen?  Making assumptions is not a smart thing to do.  However, I do know of professional models (not on this site!) who get more than $500 an hour.  You can hire them through agencies.  wink

Oh really?  So the rate has not been discussed yet?  Isn't that making assumptions?    I don't like to make assumptions, but you don't sound like you are communicating well, either here or perhaps with the model.

I know for sure that $500 an hour is not an unheard of rate ... especially for nudes and/or popular models.

Just because there are many repetitive threads about the same old issues, and often times from newbies ... does not mean this particular thread is just as valid.   You admit you are just adding more fuel to the fire.  Some people know better.  wink

I wasn't one of those suggesting that, but since it was mentioned, some models will reduce their rates to what they consider a half trade/half paid agreement, if they like working with the photographer and the photographer's work.

Sounds like this model isn't throwing you any breaks, and of course most models would willingly agree to a paid shoot.

So while I do think she wants to work with you, the income stream would seem to be of primary importance.

Its all relative. My clients pay more than that for talent sometimes. Heck, they pay me more than that sometimes.

For MM though, I suppose that is on the higher end of things.

Sorry Ivan123, DOUGLASFOTOS has us all beat!  lol

Of course you both know what this means....you must have communicated wrong, or done something wrong or she didn't want to work with you.  I mean, it couldn't possibly be that the model was out of touch with reality.

Models on MM are NEVER out of touch with reality.

Nah...it couldn't be that.  wink
