What's your theme song for today? Post a link to a song or instrumental piece that illustrates or symbolizes Today for you... it could be based on the weather, or your mood, or your schedule, or your aspirations for the day... maybe something intended to inspire/motivate you as you go about your day.

Or, if you're posting as the day is winding down, perhaps something that retrospectively defines how your day went.

Today's theme song for me is based on a cool overcast rainy day, and a yearning to blow off my chores and just nestle under blankets on the comfy couch. smile

Wow, this is a tough one. I hadn't even thought that much about a theme song for any day of the week much less for today, Tuesday. I guess this would be my theme for today though: Nelson Riddle's Route 66, since I drove my Mustang with the top down this morning. This theme has always been a favorite of mine since I was a kid in St. Louis county so many years ago.

My theme song is the same every day ... and has been for about 2 years now.  It's all about leaving the past behind, going new places with new people and not being afraid to do it all.

Ever heard Pete's original demo for that? It's pretty sweet, especially since it's kinda reminiscent of an old Elton John song in places.

I didn't hear that demo before just now.  It's definitely interesting. I think it would be interesting to know how they got from that demo to the recorded version, too.

Well, there's this, which is the demo that incorporates Pete's experiments with a Lowrey organ (using the "marimba" setting) run through a synth which created the "stuttering" phasing and other effects. As you can hear, it also has the piano part which John would adapt into forming his bass part.  Pete's basic, primitive drumming subs for Keith's always-amazing work to come (it was Keith who suggested a violin solo during the "jig" sequence at the end, and so they got Dave Arbus from East of Eden to play it). A somewhat tighter edit of the demo, with Pete's guide vocals, is here. The horn-sounding touches in this edit are also provided by early synths in Pete's home studio arsenal.

Once the Lifehouse project collapsed and Pete resigned himself to have the highlights cannibalized for use on their new album (Who's Next), they simply reproduced the organ and piano parts as you hear them on these demos, and then added their respective parts at Olympic Studios. In this clip, Glyn Johns operates the board, providing insight into the tracking for the song.

That thread about 80s music brought back some great memories! Today's theme music is upbeat + retro-futuristic.

Kick, this is one of the all time great threads! I hope it goes on for a very, very long time. I've always liked driving and riding music. For over fifteen years my wife and I rode a Gold Wing motorcycle all over the southeast and as far north as Wisconsin. The tape player often reverberated with terrific riding music like this: https://youtu.be/rMbATaj7Il8

An eternal classic, that one, and kudos to you Frank for choosing that particular clip featuring that iconic scene from that iconic film! borat

My previous theme song ... and the first time I ever heard it (that I remember, though it had been out 25 or so years at the time and more now) ...

ETA: and just for shiggles, this is a video I never get tired of, ever. I think of it as inspirational.

An entire theme channel, rather than just a theme song! Fair enough. That'll work as well. smile

For every day I'm workin' on the Illinois River
Get a half a day off with pay
Oh tugboat pickin' up barges
On a long, hot summer day

Okay, I don't work on a tugboat and it's not a long hot summer day.  But today for me had that feeling of plugging along at work, not great but not bad, looking forward to the rewards.

Today's theme song is Pink Floyd's "Grantchester Meadows",  possibly the most gentle and serene song in Floyd's entire catalog (Atom Heart Mother's "If" being a strong contender, although containing greater instrumentation, and thematically being way more traditionally-Floydian... a definite precursor to DSOTM's "Brain Damage". Also on Atom Heart Mother is "Fat Old Sun", another ultra-mellow, drowsy classic; plus, for me, one of Floyd's essential early tracks: Rick Wright's "Summer '68").

A quick note of interest about today's theme song: a sound effect (a goose's wings flapping on water as the bird takes flight) heard at about 4:25 was also used for the first (1969) release of The Beatles' "Across The Universe" on the World Wildlife Fund's charity album No One's Gonna Change Our World. That ol' Abbey Road sound effects library was sure put to good use by the folks who recorded there! smile

It's absolutely Alan Parsons Project's "Secret Garden" for today's theme song.
