Have you known a photographer to have never done a shoot with friends/relatives to suddenly advertise to shoot with a stranger. I'm pretty sure all photographers' first shoot has been with people that already know them personally. There is your reference.

The fact is, there are rapists and abusers out there in every profession. Let's not just point fingers at the photography profession. Proper caution is a great thing, rampant paranoia.....not so much.

Or they have pictures from a gang bang shoot they found on meetup.com and just borrowed a pocket wizard.  There's dozens of them every week out here.    Perfect for getting the same pictures 8 or 9 other guys are getting.    Once everything is dialed in, what's is there to differentiate one studio shot from another?  All you do is put the trigger on the next guy's camera.

i don't know about the others. but when i first started out, i'd never photographed friends or families. i did not want to. in fact, i rarely photographed friends and families in a preped setting even after all these years.

when i first joined mayhem in 2009, i had no reference or nothing.

You'd be pretty sure to be wrong - My family and friends would have clubbed me with tree branches if I had tried to practice on them - After 13 years - I've never formally shot any family or close friends

My first model shoot was with an OMP model - *MM didn't exist yet*

(When you are starting out, I figured hire a pro - at least one person will know what they are doing. - So I hired an experienced model and she was great - we got some images that helped boost my experience and visibility)
