When I shoot video the audio is not properly recorded. I'm not using an additional mic, just simply hitting record. No spoken word is understand. When played back either on camera or when it download it sounds like large factory machines working at full capacity.

Is it a setting that I've screwed up or has something gone wrong.

Let me know if anyone has encountered this.

A clip would help.

It could be a lot of things, but the most likely is that the levels are set too high, and/or there is a lot of background noise. The mics may actually be blown as well, but that's not generally likely unless you've recently tried to record just a few feet from a guitar amp or PA speaker.

Little tiny mics distort really easily, and that's probably what you're hearing.

Yeah, clip would definitely help. Although, to be honest, you probably should get an additional mic, if not just for better sound quality in general, to see if it's a problem with your on board mic or with the soundboard, if that's the proper term. I mean, I have a D600 and can't really fathom the sound issues you're having. Are you touching the camera a lot, or using auto focus? That may be an issue.

Sounds like grandpa's hearing aids when they went into feedback.

As mentioned, I'd look into an external microphone to get it away from the camera body, especially at low incoming audio levels where it might go into auto-gain and do the feedback noise thing.
