Variety,

The prolific songwriter and performer, born Prince Rogers Nelson, had a medical emergency on April 15 that forced his private jet to make an emergency landing in Moline, Ill. He performed the following day, however, and his publicist told Variety that he was battling the flu.

Prince recently cancelled two shows due to health concerns.

The music icon, who has won seven Grammys during his career, was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. He won an Oscar for best original song score in 1985 for “Purple Rain.”

One of the most iconic musicians of all time, Prince released 39 albums during a career that spanned more than 35 years.

His 1978 debut album “For You” and self-titled second LP (1979) were followed by such albums as “Purple Rain,” “Around the World in a Day” and “Sign O the Times and Batman.”

Holy crap.

Prince, Bowie, Weiland, Lemmy, Haggard, Frey, Emerson, Anderson, Kanter...the list goes on and on.

If the past few months have taught us anything, it's to go see the artists you love now, because there may not be a later.

This may be too comprehensive, but Wikipedia has them by each month. This is April.

Prince was suffering from flu, but working through it.  Emergency stop on a flight home a week ago.  I would guess pneumonia or related which often follows having flu.
Certainly unexpected.

Could flu have caused Prince's death?

I saw him in concert in SF during his Purple Rain tour. It was amazing! And I've always enjoyed his interviews with Jay Leno on the Tonight Show. It gave a glimpse of who he was beyond the music - very cool. I'm quite in shock to hear this news - RIP Prince.

Shit, he was a year younger then me.

Wasn't my style of music, but saw him a lot back in the day on MTV. Seemed like a damn good performer, and had a hell of a following.

Way too young to go.
I'm very curious to hear what the coroner will have to say.
He was a great guitarist and even greater musician.

Goddamit! I am sick of this! So much talent leaving us so early. I saw the Eagles just before Glenn Frey died and I'm still not over it. Now Prince is gone to guitar Heaven. Rest In Peace but rock on brother!

I'm also suspecting an opiate abuse per TMZ with his drug mess at the hospital where he refused to stay on that odd air travel and emergency landing incident last week.   They say he had hip surgery a few years ago so maybe too much pain meds led to organ failure.  Weird his girlfriend Vanity also died a few months ago, also age 57, due to renal failure from early drug abuse.

Aside, I don't know how Keith Richards manages to keep going on when others are dying far earlier.  That or his substance use is more far more exaggerated than other artists who may be serious closet abusers.

Anyway, great musician and performer who managed to stay in the limelight for ~40 years.  Plus, he helped many artists get ahead like The Bangles and Stevie Nicks who in 1983 he played the two synthesizers (Oberheim OB-Xa and Roland Jupiter 8) for her on "Stand Back" which made that song.  Quite talented in that they reported he could play 27 instruments.

"Stand Back" (Prince on synthesizers.):  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwdDVZsz2es

RIP Prince.

I read this insane theory that makes a lot of sense but it is out there...

Basically Prince contracted Aids in the 90's and was taking medication up until two years ago. Someone within his Jehovah's Witness community convinced him he was cured and he stopped taking his medication. Very weak immune system and contracted the flu which ultimately killed him. He also didn't take medication (allegedly) because of his religion sooo

Kinda crazy I know. But who knows.

Well, I mean it makes a hell of a lot of sense. He looked pretty damn good for being sick though. When is the last time you have heard of anyone dying of the flu and it wasn't related to Aids or the person was an infant or an elderly person?

I suspect that he died from pneumonia.
