What was the first camera you ever used?
Mom save my first one. Not sure of the name, but it has the little red window in the back. :-) At one time or another, I used 3/4 of those mentioned here. Still have the Graphlex 4x5. G Reese Aug 15 16 05:58 pm Link Olympus OM-1.... Still have...it still works like its brand new! Aug 16 16 01:05 am Link [name of some classic film camera] [statement about still using film cameras] Aug 16 16 02:14 am Link My first was a Zenit E, followed after a cpl of years by a Practika BC1 Aug 16 16 11:47 am Link Cheap Kodak Instamatic knock off. Then a Yashica B. Aug 16 16 03:50 pm Link 1873 Images wrote: +1 this is exactly the same as myself. My first 35 mm that I owned was a Mameya Sekor ( sp) and then a Kowa 2 1/4 single lens reflex Aug 16 16 06:36 pm Link Nikon N2000 made the same year as me! Aug 16 16 09:35 pm Link Great Wall 'Diana' (original) plastic camera as a birthday present when I was 6 years old.. First SLR was a Pentax K1000 Aug 17 16 07:36 am Link Sears Instamatic First SLR Minolta X-7 Aug 17 16 08:11 am Link Pentax Spotmatic, ordered direct from Hong Kong when I was in high school, about 1970. Still have it and was used for many years until I bought a Canon EOS 620. Aug 17 16 09:01 am Link It was a Zorki...35mm Soviet made trying to look like Leica.....Around 1965...... Aug 17 16 02:53 pm Link Aug 17 16 03:18 pm Link My dad got me a Mamyia Secor 500DTL when I was 10. I used it until it fell apart. In college I got a Minolta X-700 with MD-1 motor and three White Lightning WL-500's with umbrellas and a some background paper. God I loved that camera. Aug 18 16 06:35 pm Link first camera: first real camera was a Yashicamat 124 first camera I ever bought for myself: Nikon Ftn while I was still in high school Aug 18 16 07:12 pm Link I used to steal my Dad's Nikon ... FM maybe? Then he bought me an FG-20, so I'd leave his alone. I got rid of the lens in ... 2008 or so? And then a year or two ago I went through the effort of tracking it back down. My old camera probably works too, but I never use it. Honestly, I don't think film cameras still working is that impressive; I didn't use it professionally, so I was never going to run enough film through it to kill the shutter. Most of those guys had a shutter rating of some 40,000 clicks(when they even listed it), or 1,667 rolls of 35mm film. Aug 18 16 08:04 pm Link Minolta SRT-102 I bought it with my first paycheck when I was 16 because my brother-in-law had one and I admired it as an incredible piece of machinery. It was absolutely magical to look through the viewfinder, frame up a shot, focus on the split screen ground-glass, align the match needle meter, hit the button to check the depth-of-field and depress the shutter for that satisfying tactile & audible feedback. The fact that I'd get back an envelope of 4x6" prints from the drugstore where I dropped off my film was initially just an added bonus! Oh, the places this little hobby has taken me! Aug 18 16 08:26 pm Link Well, that depends on how you look at it. The first camera that I bought myself with my own money was a Kodak Ektralite 10 that I bought in the spring of "79" My first SLR, as with many photographers, was the Pentax K1000 that I bought in the Winter of "79" My first profesional grade body was a pair of Nikon F3's that I bought in "85". One new F3 and then picked up a used HP version about two months later. I used those two bodies for 20 years till I got my first digital in 2005. Aug 18 16 10:53 pm Link Aug 19 16 05:41 am Link First camera used was a Petri that my brother had. Bought it at K-Mart I believe. MY first camera, when I finally got more serious about photography? Nikon F2AS To this day it's still the best camera I've ever owned. Built like a tank! Wish Nikon could tear out the guts and put in some digital hardware. Too bad eFilm (or whatever it was going to be called) never took off. And funny how some cameras now are getting back to very basic and traditional styles. I love the manual dials and aperture ring on my Fujifilm X-T1 and lenses. Aug 19 16 06:20 am Link Aug 19 16 06:23 am Link My father gave me a used Nikon FM for Christmas back in '90. Aug 19 16 06:54 am Link Grandpa's Polaroid. Still have it and haven't used it in over 15 years. Not sure if it still works. Aug 19 16 09:29 pm Link When I started learning photography I first used the school's old manual Pentax SLRs. Soon thereafter, my own first SLR was a Miranda Sensomat RE, great for beginning! (still have a couple of the interchangeable viewfinders) Next better camera was a Nikkormat FTn, followed by Nikon FM & then Nikon FE. Been a die-hard Nikon man ever since! Aug 20 16 04:52 pm Link The camera I used first, when I was 11 and the camera was a Leica viewfinder camera, then, when I was 13 or so, my father had a different camera, don't remember the brand, but I remember the lens... My first own camera was a Konica, which was the first SLR camera built compact and had sensors inside the film compartment that was reading the code for ASA settings on the film canister. In 1984 (or so) I purchased my Minolta Dynax (Maxxum) 7000i, which I used until about 2004, when it died on me and then I switched to Nikon. Aug 21 16 01:42 pm Link Chinon Super 8 film camera, mid-1970s. Been capturing oceans of motion ever since. And Super 8 is making a comeback! Aug 21 16 03:36 pm Link I've traveled to over 20 countries, every state in the U.S., and every major city in the United States. I have hiked thousands of miles of backcountry, including above base camp at the Matterhorn. I worked at Yellowstone National Park, North Star Camp for Boys and Round Lake Resort as a Tripper for four summers during my college years. During the winters I skied the Rockies extensively, all the while carrying a Nikon SLR with a 50 mm 1.8 lens with me. http://www.tammybryan.com Aug 22 16 09:08 am Link Pentax Mz-50 Nov 17 16 03:28 am Link As a kid I had a Kodak Instamatic of some sort. Then a Ashi Pentax, I don't remember which model and I don't remember that I had it very long or why it was soon replaced by the Minolta SRT 101. That Minolta was a great camera and I am pleasantly surprised how many people here owned one. It was a real workhorse for me during my school years. When I started school I discovered View Cameras. I really fell in love with those. I built my own from a kit during my freshman year. At one point in the mid 1990's I owned and use 3 4x5s and 2 8x10s. I even had a Deardorff for a while which is the only camera that I resent myself for selling. With the move to digital and a closet full of stuff I was not using, I gave it all to my daughter during her college years to sell off on E-bay and keep the funds for herself. I created some great images on those old cameras. While I love working with the great new tools we currently enjoy, I laugh at people who think that having the next camera will change their careers. www.zavesmith.com Nov 17 16 06:44 am Link studio36uk wrote: I don't know the name of the camera. Nov 17 16 07:17 am Link My Dad's Argus C-3. It was a kick to be allowed to use it. Funny - my Dad was never far from me while I had it in my hands,,, Nov 17 16 08:43 am Link Gosh, its been so long ago I really cant remember but the first 'professional' camera I bought was a Canon 1N-RS back in 1995. Still have it, still use it and still looks as new as the day I bought it. Nov 17 16 11:39 am Link Pentax K1000 Nov 17 16 12:38 pm Link Kodak Brownie too. 1961. (does that age me?) JT Nov 17 16 01:28 pm Link First SLR camera for serious stuff was a Nikon D70s. Nov 17 16 01:37 pm Link I had one of these when I was in the Boy Scouts way back when: Borrowed my dad's Polaroid for the first day of time trials at Indianapolis in 1966. I actually got some good pictures with it. This was my first real 35mm camera around 1970: I still have my sister's 500 DTL if anyone wants it... Nov 17 16 01:38 pm Link My first camera - I still have it.
