I get the above message whenever I take a file from CS5.1 back to Lightroom 5. Is this something I need to be worried about?

Sounds like your image has less data in it than it thinks it has.

Are there any other symptoms, or just a message?

that is sounding like some kind of corruption, or a naming/file extension problem

Being worried (and its opposite) has never solved any technical problem.
You better look into it, search for info. Google shows a lot of links to Adobe's forums for this error.

Did the file name extension change from (for example) .jpg to .jpeg? That will cause that problem in some cases. Also if some extension gets added on after .jpg
