About Me

Kira Lee Cahill is a Chicago based designer. She works from her cozy home studio full of towering stacks of old fabric, dusty books, and scattered toys. Kira has always had an interest in design. Growing up, her Aunt Marian made her every dress she owned, and despite Kira’s tomboy demeanor, she wore them exclusively, rolling in the dirt, and mussing them all up. She took sewing classes as a teen, and began experimenting with altering and creating her own looks. From those humble beginnings, her love of design has grown insatiably, to the point of obsession, and has integrated every aspect of her life. Kira just finished her senior thesis collection, at Columbia College Chicago. The collection was based on Maurice Sendak's book "Where the Wild Things Are." Now that Kira has graduated from Columbia, she is working on a new collection of garments for Fall 2013, where she is creating most of the prints and fabrications through various methods. The Fall 2013 collection is based off concepts exploring witches and what it means to be on the fringe of society, still holding extreme power and wonder. Kira also opened a vintage store on Her shop, Dead Girls Vintage features garments and treasures she has scoured the lands for. She is teaching fashion design courses to teens at the Evanston Art Center, where she will also be showcasing her design work.

Kira draws inspiration from children’s books and auto-biography, and the Natural History Museum, and cartoons, and vintage treasures, and sci-fi movies, and pretty much everything in the universe that she surrounds herself with every day. She has made garments from toys, and hats from x-rays, and can’t keep herself from taking things apart and putting them back together in new and interesting ways. She loves to incorporate the unexpected into her clothing, and enjoys experimenting with textures. She has an obsession with unconventional materials (wood, metal, plastic, found objects), and often paints and alters fabrics in other ways to express her vision. Kira has a soft spot for quirky prints, and loves every aspect of the design process from sketching, fabric selection, and pattern drafting, to sewing seams and buttons, but she is truly in her element when she is off in her own world, dreaming of things to make. Her designs are an extension of herself, and wearing her clothing is like slipping inside her world. Check her out at:
