About Me

This is my artistic nude page. I am interested in exploring the normal in a non-conventional way. It is my desire to capture images that are of familiar subjects, such as the naked human form, but present those images in a unfamiliar composition to the viewer. Even if the image later becomes recognizable, it is that sense of mystery which is what I am after. There are more than enough people photographing the "norm".

Some thoughts: I often ask myself what kind of photographer am I. And I realize that this issue only applies to this site and with regards to photographing models. But yet it bothers me. Am I Fashion, Editorial, Commercial, Fine-Art? None of these titles mean anything to me as they are so ambiguous and seem to overlap with many shades of grey. I guess I am not deep enough into the world of photographing models to be able to define what type I am. If I looked at the rest of my work, I would have to say Fine Art. But Fine Art is basically a euphemism for nude photography. Yet I shoot so much more then nudes. And the other areas of photography that work in are really non-commercial. I would like my “fashion” images to have that quality. So if I needed to establish a whole to put my peg in, it would be abstract photographer. But I don’t think models would like to be represented in an abstract way. Just a guess.

At one point in my life, I was working for a large retailer photographing product for their catalog. During the down time we were allowed to experiment. Well, I decided to explore macro photography using a 4x5 camera. The studio manager came across some Polaroid’s I had shot and asked to see the film. He said that my images were unrelated and were not relevant to the work we were doing there. He said my images pushed the envelope edge so far that it wasn’t even on the table anymore, it was on the floor.

I enjoy working in the realm of macro. Marco-photography is, or at least can be a surreal abstract world. Imagine photographing things to five or ten times their actual size. Huh? Well, if you were shooting regular 35mm film and 4mm spans the negative that would be roughly 11 times larger than actual size. So what might a match head look like? How much detail would you see in the surface of the match head? How would you light something that small? What would an 8X10 print look like? What about crystals? Dirt? Your finger? Surreal and abstract is about all you’d expect because it IS another world. So, it’s another world and unrelated to photographing models and thereby not related to this site, which is why I don’t post them here.

I like to focus on a single element and compose my shot to isolate it.

I often surf through many pages of Model Mayhem and look at images that others have posted on this site with mixed results. When I look at my own body of work, including images not on MM, which encompasses many different areas of photography, I see success and failure. I may not have success every time, but hopefully I can re-work my failures into a success in the future. Photographing models is something a bit new to me. With each outing I learn a bit more. Hopefully I can apply those lessons to the next, and so on and so forth.

So in the future, I would like to explore more of the human form. I think it is where I excel and would like to explore that area further. I am interested in creating abstract images by focusing on the curves, shapes and textures of the human body. Capturing the form, negative space and balance in an image are the goals of my photography. I think this concept or style is present in all of my photography.

So at this junction, I am looking for art and figure models and even a muse to pose in the nude for me and allow me to work for that abstract image. I think it would be ideal to find model(s) that are able to hold a pose for up to a several minutes at a time. I wouldn’t ask you to be in strange or awkward positions, like standing on one toe or hanging from your fingernails while I take pictures from different angles and positions. I do not use hairstylists or makeup artists as my style of photography would not likely include your face for the abstract work. I would like to photograph models that have hair and are natural. I do not want to work with models covered in tattoos or piercings all over. I like the natural look of the human form, regardless of physical size or shape. I would like to expand my locations to include the outdoors. I am not looking to get arrested, so no shots in the middle of time square at noon on a Sunday. I have a few ideas that I would like to try, so please feel free to contact me if you are interested in working with me.
