The world of art is constantly on the move, on the take. Those
in pursuit of its energy are driven and compelled to follow it wherever it should happen to go. On any one of these fashion
pit stops, one is likely to collide with an artist known for injecting her individual stamp on the artform. Michaelis photography has captured the essence of musicians, dancers, fetish performers, and a host of other identities dwelling in the underworld of art. Her lens weaves through all lanes and genres,
ignoring the rules and expanding the boundaries of what is considered conventional.
Maren Michaelis is a Berlin-based designer, photographer and conceptual artist originally from the Baltic Sea.
Studying fashion design in Berlin, Michaelis has worked for Burberry, Joop!, and a slew of other companies spanning the globe, with stops in Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco, living and working in Paris, Switzerland and Australia.
A self-described music geek, Maren grew up on David Bowie, Black Sabbath, and The Smashing Pumpkins to name a few; the latter of which she had a hand in styling in a twisted tale of art imitates life. Very young Michaelis was inspired by witches, deep sea creatures and other oddities.. so design, music and marine biology soon became her favorite subjects.
Michaelis is also no stranger to working with some of the most acclaimed performance artists
in Berlin. Her subjects provide documentation of the city through the eyes of burlesque performers, drag queens, chanteuses, and circus freaks to name a few. Michaelis is noted for merging the analog and digital worlds into a delicious mix. This quest for interesting, titillating
content disregards commercial or conventional photography, creating a ‚caught in the act‘ vibe for which she is known for.
Venture further and one could describe Michaelis‘ art as creative and poetic - energy with its own vision and conviction. It is all encompassing - atmospheric, and expressive...sometimes more like snapshots, taking what is provided to create something out of the moment that the normal eye may not see. It is spontaneous, spur of the moment, breathing life and soul into the finished product. On the finished photo it looks all set up, like it was all planned before! Vibrant colors and superfluous accessories, alongside striking images with interesting subjects
and a spontaneous set design or striking nature. Michaelis renders her imagery contemporary
yet timeless, refusing to adhere to trends of the moment.
